  • COLUMN: Parenting the right way, part 2

Well, to continue the topic of parenting that began last week, let’s begin with some humorous statements made about this subject, all of which are anonymous.
    * The smartest advice on raising children is to enjoy them while they are still on your side.
    * Just when your kids are fit to live with, they’re living with someone else.
    * The joy of motherhood: what a woman experiences when all the children are finally in bed.
    * The secret of dealing successfully with a child is not to be his/her parent.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: How to find a quality continuing-care retirement community

    Dear Savvy Senior,
Can you give me some tips on picking a good full-service retirement community that offers all levels of housing, from independent apartment-style to nursing home care? • COLUMN: How do you parent the ‘right’ way?

Parenting — how do I do it the right way? That is today’s topic in my new series on “The Family,” which begins with this column.
Many (maybe most) parents have asked themselves questions that contain the word “right.” After reading books, magazines and other material, including some of the writings from the book of Proverbs in the Holy Bible, they believe their parenting isn’t working the way they’ve been taught it should.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: What you should know about your parents’ affairs

    Dear Savvy Senior,
My pastor recently suggested that I get informed on my elderly parents’ financial situation and end-of-life plans so I can be better prepared when something happens to them. What’s the best way to handle this and what all do I need to find out?

  • COLUMN: Resolutions v. promises: What’s the difference?
  • COLUMN: Breathe new life into your marriage

Resuscitate — what in the world does that big word mean? Well, I’m sure that the Spencer County EMT personnel know that a resuscitator is an apparatus used to restore respiration to a partially asphyxiated person, even to a person who may be unable to be restored. That doesn’t mean that they give up without trying.

  • COLUMN: Season’s greetings, happy holidays and merry Christmas

Which is it for you? I still prefer the last one. Why? Because it is more than a holiday. It actually is Christmas! And, the first two are fairly new versions that have emerged more recently. When I was a child, I remember that Christmas was just that ... Christmas, not a “season” to greet someone, or a “holiday” that is supposed to also be happy.
We also all know that there are four “seasons”: summer, fall, winter and spring. And, on that note, there are many holidays besides this one that we usually celebrate each year.
