  • COLUMN: A prescription for marriage in 2012

How does it feel to see the old year out, and the beginning of a new year? Maybe this year, the promises made to change yourself will be a true resolve, with no procrastinating. Why not start by memorizing this very short, simple little poem:
    Procrastination is my sin…
    It causes me endless sorrow…
But, I’ve made up my mind to quit…
And I will begin … tomorrow.
Well, as silly as that little poem seems, maybe it is more true than it should be. Especially, for most of you, as it relates to marriage.

  • COLUMN: Ooey gooey goodness

Before our daughter was born, we had a tradition to spend New Year’s Eve with some of our friends. We always went out to dinner, usually at a nice Chinese restaurant, and then went back to someone’s house to play karaoke or Rock Band and watch the ball drop on television.

  • Photo-themed gifts are a hit

It can be difficult to come up with gift ideas for loved ones. It is hard to come up with new ideas year after year that will be used and appreciated. The wow factor is always a plus, too.

  • The indecency of modern television

Because I choose to subscribe and support the organization known as Parents Television Council, I receive information relative to what PTC has discovered is going on in the television industry that could be harmful to you and your children.

In Volume 11, Number 5, of the PTC Insider, there is a quote from Peter Chernin, president of News Corp., the parent company of the FOX TV network: “[We will] fight to the end for our ability to put controversial, offensive, and even tasteless content on the air” (Broadcasing and Cable, Oct. 21, 2008).

  • Fill those stockings with homemade goodies

Food gifts are very popular at Christmas, but it can be difficult for the recipients to get it all eaten before it goes bad. One solution is to give food that can be frozen and eaten at a later time. Two options are cookie dough and pie in jars.

Terri Cooper and her five children have developed a unique gift for their friends and relatives. Her family enjoys homemade pie, and has to make two to have enough for the whole family. Cooper sometimes makes a large pot of soup and freezes single servings to give to her family members.

  • Argument not the best answer when opinions clash

I owned a T-shirt, purchased just for the fun of it, which read “you can either agree with me...or be wrong.” That message is often what really happens, and is one of the most difficult challenges married couples face — “knowing” you are correct when your spouse “knows” you are, in fact, incorrect.
Talk about a tight spot. When faced with this dilemma, you can either insist on your point of view or humbly bow to your spouse. You are both certain you are right, yet each of you has a completely different opinion.

  • COLUMN: We all need nurturing, support

When you were a child, you were aware of your need to be nurtured and supported. However, as you grow up, the need changes, but is still there.
Everyone wants someone who is accepting, understanding, protective and genuinely caring. When, for the most part, this is absent, it is a frequent cause of dissatisfaction with a relationship, whether being single or married.

  • Document those special holiday memories

The Christmas season is such a special time, filled with lots of events and opportunities for making memories. For years I have collected Christmas photos along with stories in an album to share with my family. Last year, I changed up my formula a little and documented Christmas in two different ways.
