    Well, we all have moods. We wake up cranky or find ourselves depressed after something goes wrong at home or work.

  • COLUMN: Dia de los Muertos: Today Mexico celebrates ‘Day of the Dead’

    Today is Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, in Mexico. It is a celebration of the lives of departed loved ones and is considered a joyful holiday. Families decorate altars or the gravesites of their family members and prepare favorite foods. The food may be the loved one’s favorites or those traditionally served on Dia de los Muertos, such as Pan de Muertos (bread of the dead).

    Makes 12 servings

    2 cups (12-ounce package) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
    1 cup creamy peanut butter, divided
    1/3 cup powdered sugar
    3 cups toasted rice cereal
    Heat morsels and 3/4 cup peanut butter in small, heavy-duty saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth; remove from heat. Add sugar; stir vigorously until smooth.

    As mentioned in last weeks column, divorce has many direct or indirect victims, including the children. When parents divorce it more likely was preceded by many instances, perhaps many months of fighting, arguing, even physical confrontations involving abusive behaviors.
    When this has happened for an extended period of time, children may be glad that this has finally come to an end, and divorce may be seen by them as a welcome relief, because the atmosphere has again become more tranquil or peaceful.

    This column relates to the reasons that a new program began last week. The program, entitled “Singles Alive,” is an effort in Spencer County to assist and support those who have gone through a divorce or are currently in the process of divorce.
    The effects of divorce can be broken into categories including emotional, behavioral, social, spiritual and financial.

  • Local club to host gardening guru Jeneen Wiche

    On Saturday at 11 a.m., the Spencer County Garden Club will host its first annual Gardens and Goodies luncheon, with guest speaker Jeneen Wiche.
    The program will raise money for the Spencer County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Tickets are $7 at the county extension office before the luncheon, and $8 at the door.
