  • Apathy, sadness, hopelessness usually equal depression

No matter what word one uses — apathy, sadness — each of the above and many more, like hopelessness, helplessness, are all symptoms and/or expressions of depression.

  • A pantry full of palatable pleasures

I grew up with mostly homemade food, instead of convenience foods from the store. As life has gotten busier over the years, I have resorted to using many packaged foods. In an effort to learn how to make staples, some of which my mama did not even make herself, I turned to the new book The Homemade Pantry by Alana Chernila.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Is a longevity annuity right for you?

    Dear Savvy Senior,
What can you tell me about longevity annuities? I come from a family with long life expectancies and I would like to protect myself from running out of money in my old age. Looking Ahead

    Dear Looking
If you’re worried about outliving your retirement savings, longevity annuities are definitely an option worth looking into.

  • COLUMN: Thanksgiving or Turkey Day?

It seems that the tradition of turkey on the day we refer to as Thanksgiving Day will be here forever. I noticed this week at Country Mart in Taylorsville (my favorite place to shop) the huge display of “gobblers” from small to large, just in time to have our mouths water at the soon-to-be experience of that aroma that beats all other aromas ... roasted turkey.
But with all the opportunities to have our taste buds stimulated, let’s now turn our attention to the topic: “what are you thankful for, not just on Thanksgiving Day, but every day?”

  • COLUMN: Try this yummy, pumpkin twist on snickerdoodles

Last week, I shared a recipe for pumpkin whoopie pies, which I discovered through a search on Pinterest, an online visual search tool. When I was looking around Pinterest for pumpkin whoopie pie recipes, I found another recipe for cookies made with pumpkin that I decided I had to try: snickerdoodle and pumpkin cream cheese sandwiches. Since I did not use the entire can of pumpkin for the whoopie pies, I had just enough left to make half of a batch of pumpkin cream cheese.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Strength-training tips for seniors

    Dear Savvy Senior,
Can lifting weights help with age-related health problems? At age 70, I have diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis and recently read that strength training could improve my conditions. What can you tell me?
    Looking for Help

    Dear Looking,
A growing body of research shows that strength training exercises can have a profound impact on a person’s health as they age — and you’re never too old to start.

  • COLUMN: Phobia, fear, worry or anxiety — which is the worst?

The answer: all of them. In fact, the dictionary definition of “anxiety” includes the words: fear, worry. And, phobia typically involves fear. So, since they are all alike, the column this week will focus on anxiety, in particular.
A disorder described as Generalized Anxiety is characterized by chronic anxiety that persists for a period of at least six months.

  • COLUMN: Make good use of that leftover Halloween candy

Halloween has come and gone and a lot of candy is left behind. I have found that Halloween candy can last far longer than one might expect, even not in the freezer. It is hard for me to pass up holiday candy clearance sales when the discount goes to 70 percent off. The candy keeps for a long time (sometimes years) and I use it for treats throughout the year.

  • COLUMN: Perfectionism: It’s really not all that it’s cracked up to be

Over the many years I have been a professional counselor, I have met many people who would qualify as perfectionists. Some are easy to be around, very pleasant and non-judgmental. Others seem to have an attitude that things should be done a certain way, usually projecting that too many people do things the “wrong” way, of course with the belief that they actually know the “right” way.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: You can write your own will, if you have the right resources

    Dear Savvy Senior,
Can you recommend some good do-it-yourself resources to help me write my will? At age 62, I want to get my affairs organized, but I hate paying a high-priced attorney fee if I can do it myself.
