  • COLUMN: Some savvy tips for tracking down a lost pension

    Dear Savvy Senior
How does one go about tracking down a lost pension? About 35 years ago, I worked at a manufacturing company for a few years that offered employee pensions, and I want to find out if I’m eligible for any money now that I’m about to retire.

    Dear Steven,

  • COLUMN: Too much stress equals overload

A national magazine shows a cartoon: a man sitting at a desk looking anxiously at five barometers on the nearby wall. One barometer is labeled Job Pressure, another states Financial Pressure, another reads Family Pressure, another reads Time Pressure, and the last of the five reads Social Pressure.
While looking at this cartoon, the viewer produces a knowing smile, however, no one needs to have these five barometers to remind the viewer of severe daily pressures.

  • COLUMN: Try a batch of yummy, rich Mackinac Fudge this Christmas

My husband and I started a tradition shortly after we got married of making goodies at Christmas for our family and friends. (The tradition was suspended when our daughter was born.) We tried out new recipes each year, but also took requests for favorites from previous years. One item that was always requested was fudge. We did not have an elaborate recipe, and in fact used the one on the back of the marshmallow cream jar. It is not real fudge, but it’s much easier and tastes great.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Tips for creating a senior-friendly home

    Dear Savvy Senior,
My husband and I are both in our 60s and are interested in making some modest changes to our home to make it more practical and senior-friendly, but aren’t sure what to do. What resources can you recommend to help us figure this out?
    Homebodies

    Dear Homebodies,

  • Apathy, sadness, hopelessness usually equal depression

No matter what word one uses — apathy, sadness — each of the above and many more, like hopelessness, helplessness, are all symptoms and/or expressions of depression.

  • A pantry full of palatable pleasures

I grew up with mostly homemade food, instead of convenience foods from the store. As life has gotten busier over the years, I have resorted to using many packaged foods. In an effort to learn how to make staples, some of which my mama did not even make herself, I turned to the new book The Homemade Pantry by Alana Chernila.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Is a longevity annuity right for you?

    Dear Savvy Senior,
What can you tell me about longevity annuities? I come from a family with long life expectancies and I would like to protect myself from running out of money in my old age. Looking Ahead

    Dear Looking
If you’re worried about outliving your retirement savings, longevity annuities are definitely an option worth looking into.

  • COLUMN: Thanksgiving or Turkey Day?

It seems that the tradition of turkey on the day we refer to as Thanksgiving Day will be here forever. I noticed this week at Country Mart in Taylorsville (my favorite place to shop) the huge display of “gobblers” from small to large, just in time to have our mouths water at the soon-to-be experience of that aroma that beats all other aromas ... roasted turkey.
But with all the opportunities to have our taste buds stimulated, let’s now turn our attention to the topic: “what are you thankful for, not just on Thanksgiving Day, but every day?”

  • COLUMN: Try this yummy, pumpkin twist on snickerdoodles

Last week, I shared a recipe for pumpkin whoopie pies, which I discovered through a search on Pinterest, an online visual search tool. When I was looking around Pinterest for pumpkin whoopie pie recipes, I found another recipe for cookies made with pumpkin that I decided I had to try: snickerdoodle and pumpkin cream cheese sandwiches. Since I did not use the entire can of pumpkin for the whoopie pies, I had just enough left to make half of a batch of pumpkin cream cheese.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Strength-training tips for seniors

    Dear Savvy Senior,
Can lifting weights help with age-related health problems? At age 70, I have diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis and recently read that strength training could improve my conditions. What can you tell me?
    Looking for Help

    Dear Looking,
A growing body of research shows that strength training exercises can have a profound impact on a person’s health as they age — and you’re never too old to start.
