  • SAVVY SENIOR: Simplified smart phones for boomers and seniors

    Dear Savvy Senior,
Are there any smartphones specifically designed for seniors that you know of? I’m interested in getting one, but at age 69, I want to find one that’s easy to see and use.
    Semi-Smart Senior

    Dear Semi-Smart,
There are actually several manufacturers who are now making simplified smartphones with features designed primarily for older users who have limited experience with modern gadgetry. Here’s a rundown of what’s currently and soon-to-be available.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Employment resources available for older job seekers

    Dear Savvy Senior,
What resources can you recommend to help older job seekers? I’m 62 and have been out of work for nearly a year now and need some help.
    Looking For Work

    Dear Looking,
While the U.S. job market has improved slightly over the past year or so, challenges persist for many older job seekers. Fortunately, there are a number of free online tools and in-person training centers scattered across the country today that can help you find employment. Here’s what you should know.

  • COLUMN: Domestic violence is a very serious family matter

The teenage daughter, the couples’ only child, had been one of my clients for several months, had made some improvements, and seemed to be doing better at home and at school. Soon after her therapy program had been successfully completed, I became engaged with her parents due to a pattern of behavior I had been completely unaware of.

  • COLUMN: Divorce – Let it become a ‘growing experience’

Well, with a topic like this, what is this columnist going to write that hopefully encourages those who already have been, or are currently going through, the often painful factors of again being single?
Having been in the practice of mental health and marriage and family issues with thousands of families over the past 45 years, I hope and pray that whatever is presented today will offer some hope, not hype, that there is life after divorce. In fact life can develop in a positive fashion with application of some basics.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Get savvy on how Medicare covers diabetic patients

    Dear Savvy Senior,
What does Medicare cover when it comes to diabetes? I’m 65 and have pre-diabetes, and would like to find out what all is covered.
    Fat Albert

    Dear Albert,
Medicare actually offers a wide range of coverage to help beneficiaries who have diabetes, as well as those who are at risk of getting it – but they don’t cover everything. Here’s a breakdown of what Medicare covers when it comes to diabetes services and supplies along with some other tips that can help you save.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: Do you need to file a tax return this year?

    Dear Savvy Senior
My income dropped way off when I retired early last year, and I’m wondering if I fall into the so called “47 percent” of Americans who won’t have to pay and income taxes this year. What can you tell me?
    Curious Senior

    Dear Curious,

  • COLUMN: Divorce should never equal the willful neglect of a child
  • Celebration cake is versatile, mimics a pound cake

We recently celebrated my daughter’s sixth birthday with a party for her friends. We do not do big parties usually, but she is involved in several activities and we did not want to leave anyone out. I usually make layer cakes for birthdays, but my husband pointed out that cutting into layers for 20 children and an unknown number of adults would be difficult and messy. Not to mention that one cake would not be enough for that many people. I do not have a sheet pan of any size either.

  • SAVVY SENIOR: How to divvy up your stuff

    Dear Savvy Senior,
What’s the best, conflict-free way to divvy up my personal possessions to my kids after I’m gone? I have a lot of jewelry, art, family heirlooms and antique furniture, and five grown kids that don’t always see eye-to-eye on things. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
