  • Clayton to attend medical school

    Taylor Clayton, the 2009 valedictorian of Spencer County High School has been accepted into the University of Pikeville Medical School.

    Clayton graduated with honors from Eastern Kentucky University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. She is currently working on a Masters in biology and teaching a clinical microbiology class at EKU. She will begin medical school in July 2014.
    She is the daughter of Dwight and Cathy Clayton of Taylorsville.

  • SCES students raise money to feed families

    Students from Mrs. Curry’s, Mrs. Mallory’s, Mrs. Palmer’s and Mrs. Sanford’s classes raised over $425 this holiday season for The Salvation Army’s Food Angel Tree.

  • PHOTO: SCES Reading Club collects pajamas, books for families

    Spencer County Elementary’s Reading Club, sponsored by faculty member Sharon Baird, recently collected pajamas and books to distribute to Spencer County students in need. The club also collected money to purchase additional pajamas and books. The items and money will go to the Spencer County Family Resource Center for disbursement.

    Spencer County Elementary School student Dawson Barr recently received a VisioBook courtesy of a Kentucky School for the Blind Charitable Foundation grant. A VisioBook is a portable electronic magnifier and distance viewer.

    Taylorsville Elementary School students learned about a variety of careers on Friday at Career day. Presenters include Stephanie Hair, LaVielle Cecil, Jeremy Kappell, Evan McKinney, Jim Oliver, Justin McElfrish, Annie Suchy, Marjorie Shular, Jeremy Druin, Jennifer Reeves, Nathan Nation, Brett Beaverson, Jodette Keefe, Dave Moody and Zac Moore.

  • PHOTOS: Fun lessons with Scrubby Bear!

    Scrubby Bear visited Spencer County Elementary School last Friday to teach kindergardners about hygiene, especially about how to wash their hands. Becky Wilson, with the Family Resource Center, and school nurse Cindy Hayes coordinated with Dedra DeBerry, a volunteer with the American Red Cross to  bring the program to SCES. DeBerry asked students what to do after using the restroom, to which the proper response was, ‘Wash your  hands and dry them, too!’

    While we waited for Pa to hang up the phone and tell us about a surprise, Granny fixed us homemade bread with straight-from-the-shrub blackberry jam. The food was much tastier coming straight from the source.
