  • Arrest made in break-ins at Spencer County High School parking lot

    An alleged repeat burglary offender was arrested by Taylorsville Police Friday for breaking into vehicles parked at Spencer County High School.
    Brandon Sparks, 19, of Taylorsville, was arrested by Lt. Rick Jewell after police received tips that items were missing from student vehicles.

  • Spanish honor society at SCHS

    Spencer County High School’s first Spanish National Honor Society, known as Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, was inducted Jan. 25. Members of the Rigoberta Menchu chapter are students Ryan Conard, Harley Sweet, Jessica Haun, Sophie Schultz and Hanna Clayton. The advisor is faculty member Vicki Bell.

    Bluegrass Community & Technical College is proud to recognize Spencer County resident Brittany Ford, who achieved dean’s list honors for the 2010 Fall Semester.  The college recognizes academic excellence by naming to the dean’s list full-time students who have earned an overall semester grade point average of 3.5 or better in courses numbered 100 or above.

    Spencer County Elementary School’s kindergarten registration will be held Feb. 28 through March from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

    Children who will be five years old by Oct. 1, 2011, and are not currently enrolled in Spencer County Preschool should register.

  • Snow forces school board to extend school year

    Much like the snow this winter, the Spencer County School Board has been forced to deal with missed days that continue to pile up.

    The Board met in a special-called meeting Monday night to decide how the district’s five schools would make up the nine days and nine hours that students have missed thus far. Board members moved to amend the school calendar so that students would be in session on President’s Day, Feb. 21, and on the district professional development day of March 14.

  • SCHS to host 30th district tourney

    Six straight nights of basketball at Spencer County High School will begin next week and local fans hope it will end with the Bears and Lady Bears advancing to the next round of postseason play.

    Spencer County is hosting the 30th District Tournament beginning Monday night and pairings and ticket information have been released. The small gym (capacity listed at 1,350) means Bear fans might need to arrive early to ensure they’ll be there to cheer on the blue.

    The names of the Western Kentucky University students who were named to the dean’s and president’s list for the Fall 2010 semester have been announced.

    The following Taylorsville students were named to the list: Brenda M. Sherlock, Kelsey L. Wagner, Stefanie J. Green, Allison J. Beeson, Brooke C. Armstrong and Kathryn E. Minyard.
