  • Teacher has a giving heart, helping hand

    Spencer County High School has been out for summer break, but for one teacher, Amanda Bruce, who teaches children with moderate to severe disabilities, it’s a year-round job.

  • Griebenow graduates, heads to Ohio State

    Zachary Hayes Griebenow graduated from his homeschool program June 15, 2013. The ceremony was held at his home on Bluegrass Acres Road with family and friends present to celebrate.
    He will attend Ohio State University in Columbus this fall as a Buckeye Scholar. He also was awarded the provost scholarship and college and department scholarships. He plans to study entomology.

  • High school to host open house

    The Spencer County High School Open House/Back-to-School night is scheduled for July 30 from 6-8 p.m. The freshman and juniors will meet from 6-7 p.m. and the sophomores and seniors will meet from 7-8 p.m.
    Students and parents will be able to pick up class schedules and pay school fees, tour the building and meet teachers.

  • Four local students named to EKU President’s list

    Four local students were named to the president’s list at Eastern Kentucky University for the spring 2013 semester.
    Those students are:
    Marissa Wente of Fisherville, a senior communication disorders major
    Christopher Zoeller of Fisherville, a freshman aviation major
    Ryan Conard of Taylorsville, a junior biology pre-medical science major
    Merritt Oder of Taylorsville, a sophomore aviation major

  • Hodgson earns EKU dean’s award

    Caleb David Hodgson of Fisherville was recently announced as one of 338 dean’s award recipients for the spring 2013 semester at Eastern Kentucky University.
    Hodgson is a junior criminal justice major.
    To earn the dean’s award, students must achieve dean’s list honors at EKU for three semesters, not necessarily consecutive. A lapel pin is presented to students by the dean of their academic college.

  • Clayton graduates from EKU

    Taylor Corinne Clayton of Taylorsville recently graduate from Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science in biology, pre-medical science.
    Clayton joined 1,708 graduates at commencement ceremonies May 11.
    The graduates were honored at commencement ceremonies May 11. The keynote speakers that day were U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, former University of Kentucky President Dr. Charles Wethington and author/educator Silas House.

  • Get ready for READIFEST!

    Spencer County’s annual Healthfair/Readifest is Saturday, July 27, at Spencer County Elementary School from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
    The community’s biggest back-to-school event provides free school supplies from local churches and agencies, as well as safety, health and wellness, dental and vision information and screenings.
    The event will also feature fitness demonstrations.
    Families are asked to allot one hour to attend the event.

  • Hesselbrock earns master’s at Georgetown University

    Emily Hesselbrock, formerly of Spencer County, graduated May 17 from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. with a Masters in public relations and corporate communications.
    She is a daughter of Steve and Lynn Hesselbrock of Spencer County. She currently resides in Arlington, Va., and works on Capitol Hill as the deputy press secretary for Sen. Mitch McConnell.

  • EKU announces spring 2013 dean’s list

    The following local students were named to the spring 2013 dean’s list at Eastern Kentucky University.
