  • Don't be sucked in by counterfeit identities

By PATRICK NIX, Pastor, Lighthouse Baptist Church

  • COLUMN: Are you feeling trapped?

Not long ago I was stuck on an elevator. It reached the floor I wanted, but the door wouldn’t open. After a long day I just wanted to get to my hotel room and call it a day. Instead I spent the next 45 minutes trapped, just waiting for someone to get me out of that little box. Someone had to come with a key to get me safely out of the elevator.

  • COLUMN: Teach children to fear the Lord

Each year it gets harder to raise our children up in the fear of God. Our children come in contact with a lot of ungodly things in the world. Television, politics, government leadership, news from around the world — everything is infiltrating our children’s minds.

  • COLUMN: Fearful times call for courage from God

We live in fearful times. Overseas an ambassador is murdered, embassies are attacked, and our troops are still in danger in Afghanistan. Riots in the streets endanger American travelers throughout North Africa and the Middle East. But it isn’t just overseas, everyday it seems there is a murder, a robbery or some other danger not far from our back door.
Then throw in an unsettled economy, high unemployment, job losses, salary cutbacks, and a there is plenty of fear to go around.

  • COLUMN: Managing money should hurt a little

The other day I was balancing my checkbook, and I was reminded about how dangerous those little plastic ATM cards are. Before you know it, you can spend a lot of money on a little bit of nothing. Now don’t get me wrong I like the convenience, but that convenience carries a risk.

  • COLUMN: God’s grace can overtake the difficult days

As we look at the grace of God, we see how God loved us. We also see how the grace of God took dominion over us.

  • COLUMN: Cut off the noise and pay attention

Every day we are bombarded. Over and over and over again pictures and voices, sights and sounds try to grab our attention. Buy our toothpaste for a sexy smile. Come to our movie and you will never be the same. Look at me, buy this, enroll in that.
Have you noticed that on some channels two-hour movies now take two and a half to three hours to run? Some one-hour TV shows have 18-19 minutes of advertising. That’s just TV. Add in radio spots, billboards, and even the Internet ads and we see a lot of advertising every day.

  • COLUMN: Country struggles with sexual immorality

I enjoy writing in the Magnet on the church page and I am always getting good comments about it. One person in a high government position told me that he read my article every week and said he really enjoyed it, but he thought the safe sex article I wrote was the best of all.
I assured him [abstinence] was the only way that was 100 percent safe and he said he agreed.

  • COLUMN: Examining how to deal with the evil in our lives

As we look at evil ways in our life, the dictionary gives this meaning for evil: 1) something bad, sin, wickedness, evil quality or act. 2) a thing that does harm; crime and poverty are some of the evils of society.
Many times I hear in our society about how evil we have gotten in our country, but most of us know it does not have to be this way.
David wrote in Psalms 23:4, “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
