  • COLUMN: A new day

Happy New Year! Another fresh new page turned on the calendar. Welcome to 2014.
Some of us will vow to get more organized, some will vow to relax a little, and most of us will be looking to shed a few pounds. Right now, or more probably tomorrow, gyms and diet centers will be full. With the beginning of a new year comes the hope that we can somehow remake ourselves.

  • COLUMN: The kingdom of God

    A reading from Matthew 3:1-12:

  • COLUMN: It's time for Jesus

    A reading from Romans 13:11-14:
Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

  • COLUMN: The star to outshine all stars

Scientists tell us that there are billions upon billions of stars in the sky. I don’t know about that, I have never stopped to count them, but I do look up in wonder at God’s creation from time to time.
And among all those billions, the Bible tells us of one particular star that announced the birth of Christ. God used that one star to lead the wise men on a journey to find the King of Kings. They probably expected to find him in a great palace somewhere, but instead it led them to a little country town.

  • COLUMN: Capture the real meaning of Christmas in your heart

Just a week from today and it is Christmas.  I love Christmas, I love the lights, I love the snow, when we get it. I love the trees and the decorations.  I love the cards and letters. I love sharing gifts with friends and family, although I admit the shopping part is not my favorite thing.
Some of you probably started watching Christmas movies on TV right after Halloween. Some of us love the Charlie Brown Christmas Special, or even the Grinch.  Some of us love baking and cooking, some of us just love the eating part.

  • COLUMN: Let God cleanse your heart

I don’t know about you, but just about every day I hop in the shower.  The thing is, that even though I shower every day, I always need another shower the next day.
Some days we get sweaty and muddy, then it might take another shower to clean up at the end of a day.  But  a lot of the time it is just that life gets a little grimy from time to time.  Whether we work in an antiseptic hospital or in an office cubicle, whether we are on an assembly line or out working on a road crew, by the end of the day a little dirt has accumulated.

  • COLUMN: God is a refuge

    A reading from Luke 23:26-30:
