  • A resolution revolution

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? A lot of us do, but making them and keeping them are two different things aren’t they? Maybe we are approaching this whole thing the wrong way!

It is one thing to resolve to lose 10 or 15 pounds, but what if you need to lose 40 or 50 or even more? Most of us would like to save a little money, but what if you have $10,000 in credit card debt plus a car payment? It’s hard to set aside for savings when we are barely making our regular payments!

  • Remembering when Hollywood liked Christmas and marriage

A few days before Christmas, I checked the schedule for Turner Classic Movies, one of the few TV channels I watch. I was looking for Christmas movies, maybe the 1938 Reginald Owen version of “A Christmas Carol” or something like that - something for the family. I was pleased to find three favorites back-to-back that I’ve seen with my wife and daughters, all nice Christmas romances - and all with a similar happy ending.

  • Why the shepherds?

I have always been interested in the nativity story. Joseph and Mary making the long journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the Roman census has always piqued my interest. Why couldn’t the Inn Keeper find someplace for Mary and Joseph on the night Jesus was born? Did Bethlehem as a whole miss the birth of the King of Kings? Didn’t anyone show up to assist this young couple who was forced to use a manger for a cradle?

  • The true Spirit of Christmas

This year it will come in many forms. It may be a version of Dickens’ classic “Christmas Carol,” when the ghosts of Christmas wake Scrooge up to the Spirit of the season. It may be a Hallmark movie, or the newest version of “The Santa Claus,” encouraging us to believe again in Santa. Or maybe it will be George Banks reliving his “Wonderful Life,” and discovering how love, self-sacrifice, community and family are so vital.

  • Making the most of today

Some people focus on the past, some dream about the future, but we all live in the present. You can spend all of your time looking back on the past and lose touch with the reality of today. Or you can spend all day dreaming about tomorrow and wasting today away. Regardless of yesterday and tomorrow, today is all we have. And we should make the most of it.

Be careful to avoid the trap of backward thinking. It is easy to allow your past to consume you.
