  • COLUMN: Black Friday craziness encroaches on Thanksgiving

    Once upon a time the Christmas buying season began after Thanksgiving, and that seemed to work out for everybody. Then it began to seep over into November, earlier and earlier, and now we barely get past Halloween before the Christmas sales start.
    And then, this year, it seems that Thanksgiving day itself was sacrificed. Perhaps this began a year or two ago and I simply didn’t notice, but now it is hard to miss. It seems that every major chain of stores now starts “Black Friday” on Thursday.

    Risen Lord Church steeple returns
    Risen Lord Lutheran Church’s steeple has returned to Taylorsville. This steeple has had quite a journey from its beginnings in Campbellsville to its first home in Fairfax County, Va., then to Risen Lord Lutheran in Taylorsville and back to Campbellsville for repairs and returning just in time for the 2012 Christmas Tour.

    Cumbos to host gospel sing
    The Cumbos Old Gospel Barn will host a gospel sing Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with special guests The Blessed Duet and the Cumbos.
    The event is free and open to the public.

    New Hope Tabernacle announces revival
    New Hope Tabernacle, located at 722 Townhill Road, will host revival services Sunday, Nov. 25 through Wednesday, Nov. 28.
    Sunday services will be at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Services Monday through Wednesday will be at 7 p.m.
    Pastor Joe Vires invites the community to attend.

    In the Gospel of John chapter 8, Jesus said to those listening to him: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  
    With these words, Jesus teaches us that truth is the means to freedom.  
    Truth is a very important part of Jesus’ teaching.  He called himself the truth when he said, [John 14:6] “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

    Grief ministry meetings hosted at Spencer Christian Church have resumed. The next meeting is tonight (Wednesday) at 6:45 p.m.
    A dinner will be available at 6 p.m. for those who wish to attend.

    Finchville Baptist Church recently announced the following events:
    •The church is hosting a canned food drive with the intent of collecting stuffing mix and instant potatoes on Sunday.

  • COLUMN: We don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to give thanks to God

    Believe it or not Thanksgiving is next Thursday. I remember sharing Thanksgiving at my grandparents’ house, lots of kids, lots of food, and lots of fun. I hope you have a lot of memories like that.
    But I also remember my grandfather’s prayers. After everybody finally showed up and all the kids were finally corralled, we would bow our heads. Then my grandfather would pray, he would give thanks for the food, he would give thanks for the family, and sometimes he would even call us by name. As a child I remember

    Plum Creek Baptist Church is hosting a chili supper and gospel sing Friday at 5 p.m.

    A storm coming through can sure change things in a hurry. Last week it was super-storm Sandy, a hurricane, arctic blast and Nor’easter all rolled into one. But it doesn’t take a super-storm to shake things up. A regular hurricane can do a lot of damage; a tornado can sweep through in a hurry. Wind and rain and snow, ice and bitter cold can alter a landscape quickly.
