  • With spring just around the corner, and with my brain a little mushy from a long cold winter, I thought it was time to brush up on some garden nomenclature. I have long been convinced of the value of understanding more about plants than the mere fact that they need sun, soil and water. The more we learn about what plants need and how to determine if they are getting it, the more we will enjoy the act of gardening.

  • It’s difficult to envision mowing your lawn this spring when frost or snow greets you nearly every morning. Yet that first spring mowing, usually in late March, begins your most important annual lawn duties.
The first mowing makes the lawn look spring-like and very attractive.  Subsequent regular mowing hardens the grass for drought and heat stresses later on.
So when the first clump of grass grows above the mowing height, mow, even if a lot of the yard doesn’t need to be mowed yet.

  • Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
John 10:25-29 says, “Jesus answered, ‘I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.’”

  • I don’t know who invented the door, but to whomever did, I am very thankful. Our front doors keep out the wind, rain and cold of winter. Inside doors allow us some privacy in busy households. Some doors allow us to hide messy rooms when we have guests over.

  • Finchville Baptist events
Finchville Baptist Church recently announced its March and Easter-related events:
•The church will host a fish fry and silent auction on March 23 from 5 to 8 p.m., serving as a fundraiser for the Guatemala Mission Team. Silent auction donations are being accepted until Sunday. The team also will accept donations for cakes and pies to be auctioned.

  • Dear Savvy Senior,
What can you tell me about sleep apnea? My husband, who’s 60, has become such a terrible snorer he wakes himself up at night, and he keeps me up too.
    Sleepy Shelly

    Dear Shelly,
If your husband is a loud snorer who wakes himself up during sleep, he probably needs to be tested for sleep apnea, a dangerous disorder that affects around 22 million Americans – and most don’t even know it.

  • Talking — it’s something everybody does, some too much and some too little. What is your pattern? Do you know if you actually have a pattern? If so, how did it become a pattern? If not, can you learn better ways to communicate that, in particular, helps you to better connect with your partner, family, friends? The following several patterns of communication may help you in this most essential part of your life.

  • A year and a half ago, my friend of 30 years moved from two states away to live four miles from my home. We have known each other since second grade, but this was the closest we had ever lived to one another.
We often spent time together when she first moved, but with the craziness of life with kids, work and community commitments, we now go weeks or sometimes much longer without seeing one another. Just before Christmas, we decided that it was time to have a girls’ night, and that the perfect activity for us would be to paint on canvas together.
