  • Today I was at the store and I noticed that a half-gallon of milk cost about $2.20, while a gallon cost about $2.90. Does that strike anyone as a little strange? Only 70 cents for that second half-gallon?
But then again a couple of days ago I was buying some canned dog food. Now it is certainly easier to buy a shrink wrapped package of 6 or twelve cans, but then I looked at the price. For the same dog food, the individual cans were considerably LESS expensive per can. Does something seem wrong with that?

The Spencer County High School FFA team placed first at the Eastern Kentucky University dairy judging contest. Team members are, from left, Shane Greenwell, Bryce Martin, Cecilia Petersen and Marianne Gaddie. Marianne was named high individual, Bryce came in second and Cecilia was third overall.

  • Normally, a hot dry year would favor vegetable production as long as growers have adequate irrigation. However, when daytime temperatures inch up over 100 degrees Fahrenheit like we’ve seen several days this year, we begin to see problems with many vegetable crops.

  •  Soon, many vegetables and fruits will be ready for harvesting, and many gardeners will have more produce than they can readily eat. Those who want to preserve fresh, summer foods for later consumption will consider either freezing or canning the harvest. But is one way of preservation better than the other? The answer depends on the type of food you want to preserve.
If proper techniques and correct temperatures are used, frozen foods retain greater amounts of their vitamin content, natural color, flavor and texture.

  • Having had the privilege of being able to help many survivors (more than a hundred) of childhood abuse, I’ve heard the many memories that were presented by the adults who have been able to, eventually, recover from the devastating effects of this type of horror.

  • Dear Savvy Senior,

    Nearly Retired

    Dear Nearly,

  • The Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart. Therefore God anointed him King over all Israel. David never forgot that God put him in his position as king.

Finchville Baptist to hear review of summer activities

  • Just about the time our heads hit the pillows my wife said, “What was that?” At that point, I didn’t hear anything so we just laid back down. Sure enough, a few minutes later I heard something.
A beeping sound echoed through our house. But it was hard to track down. I checked the bedrooms and bathrooms, the living room and the kitchen; I checked the laundry room, nothing. I went downstairs to my office, nothing. I went to the garage, nothing. It seemed to be coming from everywhere at once, but nowhere in particular.
