  • U.S. HIGHLIGHTS

    U.S. corn for grain production was estimated at 12.4 billion bushels, up slightly from the Nov. 1 forecast but 1 percent below 2010. The average yield was estimated at 147.2 bushels per acre. This was up 0.5 bushel from the Nov. forecast but 5.6 bushels below the 2010 average yield of 152.8 bushels.

  • Aaron Ashley of Taylorsville was named to the Morehead State University dean’s list for the 2011 fall semester.
    To be named to the list, a student must be enrolled on a full-time basis and achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the current semester.

  • Amanda Stewart of Taylorsville graduated from Morehead State University with a Master of Arts teaching degree during the 2011 fall commencement ceremony.
    MSU is an affirmative action, equal opportunity, educational institution.

  • St. Catharine College recently announced the list of students who have achieved extraordinary academic success for the fall 2011 semester. The dean’s list includes all students who had a grade point average of 3.6 - 3.999. The following students were recognized for their academic acheivement:

  • On Friday, Jan. 13, the Spencer County Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 23 new members. The ceremony was led by NHS President Corey Thomas and sponsor Mary Baldock.

    This club is comprised of students that exhibit high scholarship, leadership, character and community service. The ceremony included new members lighting candles from the torch representing the area most significant to their lives and taking a pledge to uphold the high purposes of the club, being loyal to their school and maintaining high standards in their lives.

  • When I grew up, many times I would hear someone tell something and someone else would respond, “That doesn’t sound right,” and they would call the person “Doubting Thomas.”
    I grew up with “Doubting Thomas,” not knowing it came from the Bible. I believe a lot of people who would use this saying did not know it came from the Bible either.
    In John 14, Jesus told his disciples that he was going away to prepare a place for them and where he was there they could be, also.

  • Do you hold the door for someone following you into a store? Guys, do you step out of the way and let a lady go through the door first? We are in such a hurry we brush past people who are struggling with terrible health issues and who deserve our patience and respect.  Don’t our parents and grandparents deserve a little respect and consideration?

  • Irene Goodall, second from right, celebrated her 90th birthday with family on Jan. 3 in Taylorsville. Goodall has nine children, several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
