  • Quarreling and exhorting not allowed at Little Union

    You just never know where interesting Spencer County history may be found. For instance, on the Kentucky Baptist Histories Baptist History Homepage appears the “Year Book of Little Union Baptist Church Fairfield, Ky.

    Since Spencer County wasn’t formed until 1824, the church was in Nelson County when it was formed in 1811. Here’s the  item from the Nelson County Library:

    Bible Study

  • FFA members among American star finalists

    Two of the 16 National FFA American Star finalists are members of Spencer County FFA, the National FFA Organization has announced.

    “I want to congratulate Andrew Baird and Stephanie Mitchell on this outstanding achievement,” Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. “This is the first time Kentucky has had two American Star finalists in the same year, and having them come from the same chapter is even more remarkable. These young people are to be commended for their hard work and discipline.

  • Jewell graduates from Dept. of Criminal Justice

    Damon C. Jewell, of the Louisville International Airport Department of Public Safety, graduated July 17 from basic training at the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training Center. The Department of Criminal Justice Training Center is a state agency on Eastern Kentucky University’s campus in Richmond.

  • Blue Grass Energy receives Energy Star partnership award

     Blue Grass Energy announced today that it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with a 2009 ENERGY STAR Leadership in Housing Award.

     This award recognizes Blue Grass Energy’s efforts to promote energy-efficient construction and environmental protection by sponsoring an ENERGY STAR for New Homes program in its service area last year.

     Blue Grass Energy first began using Energy Star guidelines for its Touchstone Energy Home program in 2005. BGEnergy members get a free home energy rating (HERS), valued at $500.

  • 4-H and FFA hog show winners

    The Spencer County Fair 4-H and FFA Hog Show was this past Saturday, July 18, with Warren Beeler from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture judging.

    There were showmanship classes for all ages, including novice.

    Supreme Breeding Gilt Champion went to Ashley Montgomery with her Yorkshire. Reserve Supreme Breeding Gilt Champion went to Danielle Montgomery with her Duroc.

    Tonight across Kentucky, some 7,000 children are not sleeping in their own homes but rather, they have been removed to the care of foster homes or residential facilities because of some form of abuse or neglect. May is Foster Care Awareness month and a perfect time to recognize that the need for foster parents continues to rise for a number of reasons.
