    Five girls from Spencer County attended the Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys and Girls Ranch during session 2 (June 14-19).   • Four Spencer County FFA members represented the National FFA Organization, as 2008 National FFA Champions in the International Youth Dairy Judging competition held   June 27 in Scotland.   

    Casandra Petersen, Michella White, Kelli Smitha, and  Whitney Owens competed against 23 other teams from the U.S.  representing   universities, junior colleges, and the 4-H, and several hundred teams from the United Kingdom and Europe.   

  •  Cub Scout Pack #177 is a new pack in Spencer County. They are very excited about getting started and have been meeting weekly since June. Meetings are held at Taylorsville Assembly of God. They will be having a Meet & Greet Family Night on July 24 at 7 p.m. at the church. This is an opportunity to meet all of the members of the pack and join. They will also be having a yard sale July 25. If anyone is interested in donating items, please contact Larry Fields at 477-5622.   • VBS at Little Mount Baptist

  • Elvis Presley has been known to affect the lives of people all over the world. Even here in Taylorsville, a woman's life was changed by the lyrics of his songs.

    Gena Smith-Gaines was inspired to begin writing songs and poetry when she heard the music of Elvis Presley. 

    “When I heard his records I really enjoyed the music and the words. I decided I would like to write songs,” Gaines said. 

  • Tuesday thing

    Spencer County Middle School Library will be hosting Tuesday Thing Programs. These special programs start at 12 p.m. The library will be open 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.

    July 14, Movie Maker Basics: SCHS student, Shane Greenwell, gives the basics of how to get a movie saved and ready to present without a pesky red X where pictures and videos are supposed to appear!

    Other events include: July 21, Birds of Prey; July 28, Stamping and Advanced Movie Maker: Aug. 4, Beach Blanket Party.

    Road delays

  • In the tough economic times, people have been coming up with unconventional ways of pulling in some extra cash. Wes Bridwell is one of them. He has been unemployed since November 2008 but he hasn’t had trouble keeping himself busy. 

    Bridwell has been carving 90 pound rocks into the shape of Kentucky to give and sell to locals. 

  • Recently, the Kentucky Office of the State Entomologist, in consultation with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, issued a quarantine for 20 counties due to the emerald ash borer. Since the quarantine was issued, questions have arisen about the emerald ash borer, including controlling its spread and effects on ash trees.
