  • Spencer County opens Public Library Workforce Center

    Spencer County residents seeking employment opportunities now have more computer access, training and job workshops at the new Public Library Workforce Center (PLWC). The Spencer County Public Library is one of 46 public libraries in the state that will have a PLWC.
    The centers house computers and software that will be used to provide training in a formal workshop setting to Kentucky residents seeking employment opportunities.

  • Middle, high school drama students to perform ‘The Hobbit’

    Magic descends on Taylorsville this week as the Spencer County middle and high school drama students perform their production of “The Hobbit.”

    The show opens on Thursday, May 10 at 7pm in the middle school theater. The cost is $2 for students and $4 for adults. Other performances are on May 11 and 12 at 7pm and Sunday, May 13 at 2pm.

    Auditions for the play were in February. Twenty-eight actors and twenty-three crew members have worked hard to get the play ready. Approximately 70% of the students involved are from the middle school.

  • WHAT'S HAPPENING: Community Calendar

    Sanctuary Arts Center to feature local artist exhibits
    The Sanctuary Arts Center is sponsoring a weeklong Art Appreciation Exhibition, dedicated to resident artists Jim Johnson, Joe Maupin, and Lois Platt, and featuring Kentucky Gourd Society artists and others.
    The show continues daily through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    The event is free and open to the public and everyone is invited.
    As a cap to the weeklong exhibition, the public is invited to mingle with the artists on Friday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

  • PHOTO: That’s a lot of pills!

    The Taylorsville Police Department collected 56 pounds of pills and 21 pounds of liquid medicine during Saturday’s drug drop off, held in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency. Residents could bring any expired/unused/unwanted pills, liquids, needles or other medications for free and safe disposal, no questions asked.

  • An unexpected guest blows in...

    This hot air balloon, at left, landed on Bailey Court in Allen Place North on Saturday evening — right in the yard of Terri Cooper.

    ‘[The kids and I] ran out on the back porch to watch it fly over and to our surprise the hot air balloon pilot yells out, “Hey, can we land in your yard?” Well, of course our answer was yes! The pilot had to negotiate a very hard landing between houses and trees, but was able to land expertly even with the heavier winds,’ Cooper said in an email to The Spencer Magnet.

  • Police department hosting drug drop this Saturday

    The Taylorsville Police Department will be hosting a drug drop off in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Taylorsville City Hall parking lot at 70 Taylorsville Road. Residents can bring any expired/unused/unwanted pills, liquids, needles or other medications for free and safe disposal, no questions asked. Officials asked that all medications be in sealed containers. Pills should not be mixed with any liquid medications.
