• Culver in ‘student spotlight’ in EKU publication

    Editor’s note: Spencer County native Kaitlin Culver was featured in the student spotlight in the fall 2013 edition of Eastern Kentucky University’s Ag Apprise. Kaitlin’s mother, Becky, said her daughter developed her love for agriculture as a student at SCHS. The article is reprinted below with permission from the author.

    Kaitlin Culver, an agricultural business and marketing student is developing a proposal to bring a local farmers market to the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.

  • PHOTO: Leonard earns Eagle Scout rank

    The latest scout of BSA Troop No. 63 to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout is Christopher Connor Leonard. Accomplishing this in a little more than three years at only 14 years old, he is one of the troop’s youngest to earn Eagle Scout. He completed this rank earning approximately 40 merit badges with more than 350 service hours completed. Leonard also completed an Eagle project at the Louisville Zoo refurbishing the Wetlands Exhibit. He is a son of Todd and Angie Leonard.

    TES to host veterans concert Thursday
    Taylorsville Elementary School is hosting a Veterans Day concert Thursday in the TES gym at both 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. All veterans who have served or who are currently serving are invited to attend.
    Many of the school’s homeroom classes have also made decorations and crafts to honor and salute veterans in the community.

  • Hickory Ridge, West River roads on state project list

    More than $7 million in Rural Secondary Road asphalt resurfacing projects were awarded recently by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
    The projects will result in improved roadways in 14 Kentucky counties, including Spencer.
    Two routes were selected — a 2.3-mile section of Hickory Ridge (KY 1416) from 2 miles northeast of KY 248 to KY 1795; and a 7-mile section of West River Road (KY 2885) from KY 652 to KY 55.
    Louisville Paving Company was awarded the contract for $387,656. Completion date is scheduled as June 30, 2014.

    SCHS band taking Thanksgiving turkey, holiday ham orders
    The Spencer County High School band is currently hosting its Thanksgiving fundraiser, accepting orders for fully cooked 9- to 10-pound boneless sage dressing marinated turkey breasts. Boneless cooked turkey breats are $55. Raw 9-pound boneless turkey breasts are $37. Pumpkin spice bundt cakes can be ordered for $23. Orders are due today and can be picked up after school Nov. 21.

  • PHOTO: Kentucky Retired Teachers Week runs through Sunday

    Oct. 21-27 is Kentucky Retired Teachers Week. The 106 retired teachers living in Spencer County give back to the community in a variety of ways. Last year, Kentucky’s retired teachers donated more than 704,000 volunteer hours valued at $12.6 million. Also, the pensions earned by retirees result in thousands in taxes for the county and profits for Spencer County businesses. Kentucky’s retired teachers have devoted their careers to the education and training of thousands of Kentucky’s youth.

    The Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District recently placed into service a 2014 F-350 4x4 Brush Truck. This apparatus carries a number of hand tools as well as a pump and 250 gallons of water.
