  • Little Union Baptist celebrates 200 years of faith

     The congregation of Little Union Baptist Church celebrated 200 years of faith and history last Wednesday.

    The church is led by pastor Will Sykes, who said Little Union is a testament to God’s goodness.

    “This church has a great heritage,” Sykes said. “There are so many people that this church has touched.”  

  • Taylorsville Farmers Market is open for business

    The Taylorsville Farmers Market opened April 23. The market is open on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. until no later than noon.The Saturday morning location is at Sanctuary Arts Center, near the intersection of Highways 44 and 55 in downtown Taylorsville.

  • Sheriff’s department to conduct safety checkpoints

    The Spencer County Sheriff’s office will conduct periodic traffic safety checkpoints beginning May 23 and continuing through June 5, according to a news release.
    The locations will be those approved by the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office Policy and Procedures Manual, the news release said.
    There will also be special traffic enforcement in high collision areas using radar, laser and saturation patrols, the release said.

  • Democrats host vote drive

    The Spencer County Democrats hosted a “Get out the Vote” drive on Saturday.
    Carmin Gaines, Winford Sweazy, Diane Sheeley, Betty Schmidt and Jane Schultz participated.
    “We signed up several new voters,” Gaines said.

  • Local roads to close for work Thursday and Friday

    Temporary lane closures on Ky. 44 in Spencer County between the Bullitt/Spencer County line and Saddlebrook Road (mile points 0 and 2) are scheduled for later this week, according to a news release from the Department of Highways District 5 Office.
    These lane closures are scheduled for Thursday and Friday to allow for roadway resurfacing.
    The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur, the news release said.

  • Local VFW, Ladies Auxiliary meet second Thursday of the month

    Taylorsville VFW Post #11426 and the Ladies Auxiliary have their monthly meeting the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. The post is located at 106 Washington Street, Taylorsville. All veterans and their spouses are encouraged to attend.
     

  • Red Scooter hosting community apron contest

    The Red Scooter is hosting an apron contest to honor local mothers. Entries are due on or before May 1 with a $1 per entry fee.

  • April marked as child abuse awareness month

    April is Child Abuse Prevention Month – in Spencer County and around the state.
    In 2010, there were 155 reports of alleged child abuse or neglect in Spencer County, according to a news release provided by the Spencer County office of the Department of Community Based Services.
    On average in the past year, there were approximately 20 Spencer County children in foster care after being removed from their home of origin due to substantiated abuse or neglect, the news release said.
