  • What's Happening — Week of Oct. 23

    Fall waste tire amnesty
    The fall 2013 waste tire amnesty will be at the Spencer County Road Department on Fairgrounds Road on Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday from 8 to 3; and Sunday from 8 to noon.
    No solid tires will be accepted. Dealers may turn in tires at a cost of $1 per tire. The event is open to Spencer County residents only; proof of residency is required.
    County employees will be onsite to help with unloading.

    Bevin to speak in Spencer on Thursday
    U.S. Senate candidate Matt Bevin, Republican, will speak in Spencer County on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Kentucky Farm Bureau building, at 695 Taylorsville Road, next to Dairy Queen.
    Bevin, 46, lives in Louisville, and will accept questions after he speaks. The event is sponsored by the Spencer County Tea Party. For more information, call Carol at 502-618-1940.

  • WHAT'S HAPPENING: The week of Oct. 9

    Cobras to sponsor kickball tournament
    The Spencer County Cobras basketball team is sponsoring a kickball tournament fundraiser.
    The tournament is open to adult co-ed teams and the entry fee is $100 per team.
    The event will be Saturday at Ray Jewell Memorial Park with times to be announced.

    Mount Eden Saddle Club hosts end of season show
    The Mount Eden Saddle Club will host an end of season show on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Mount Eden Ruritan grounds/show ring.

    Saturday, the Taylorville Lake Conservation Association hosted its 14th annual Taylorsville Lake Clean Sweep.
    This year, 238 volunteers came out and cleaned around the lake and Salt River.

    SCHS annual chili supper
    The Spencer County High School annual chili supper will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
    The cost is $8, which includes a hotdog, chili, drink and dessert.
    Dine in and carry out options are available.
    All proceeds benefit the class of 2014 project graduation.

    Country ham breakfast
    Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #210 will have an all-you-can-eat country ham breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday. The breakfast is $7 per person. Carry-out is available. Everyone is welcome.

  • Library announces upcoming October events

    The following events are coming up at the Spencer County Public Library:
    • Sassy Readers on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. This month the group is reading “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere,” by ZZ Packer.
    • Cornbread Mafia author James Higdon will make an appearance at the library Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. People can revisit the 70s and 80s in Washington County with Higdon, who will be signing books and speaking about his works.
