  • PHOTO: Public meeting about realigning KY44 and replacing Blue Bridge

    Residents are encouaged to attend a public meeting organized by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.  at Spencer County Elementary. Members of the cabinet will in Taylorsville to discuss road improvements to KY 44/Mt. Washington road and the replacement of the Blue Bridge. Public input will be allowed.

    Retired teachers meeting

    The Spencer County Retired Teachers are going to the Yew Dell Gardens ($5 fee) in Crestwood and to the Red Pepper restaurant for lunch on Thursday. They will meet at the First Baptist Church at 9 a.m. for a short meeting and then carpool for the trip. All retired teachers are invited and encouraged to bring a friend. Please RSVP by today.

  • Selby joins Magnet

    The Spencer Magnet welcomes Elk Creek resident Hope Selby as our new graphic designer – bringing with her 10 years experience in the field of advertising.

    Selby will be rejoining the Magnet staff after a brief stint at the Sentinel-News, also a Landmark Enterprise, Inc. newspaper. She will be replacing former graphic designer Whitney Hardin, of Bloomfield, who took a new position in Bardstown.

  • Taxes spared county from deficit

    While neighboring counties are reporting budget shortfalls, proposing salary freezes and even 4-day work weeks, Spencer may be one of the few county governments to present a budget that balances.

    Spencer County Fiscal Court received their first glimpse of a $4.57 million proposed budget presented by Judge Executive David Jenkins earlier this month. The overall operating figure reveals a leveling-off, with a bottom line that is $2,000 less than the current year. It’s in the internal figures, however, where some juggling occurs.

  • Adams upbeat about school district’s 09-10 budget

    The best way to describe the superintendent’s tentative budget is with the words: cautiously optimistic.

    During the three-hour discussion, board members gathered information about special education and transportation efficiency, but it was the budget that took center stage. In his review, Superintendent Chuck Adams began by saying that the district’s $16.4 million general fund budget still has a few holes to fill – especially when it comes to flexible focus funds.

  • Drury discusses drug intervention

    Spencer County Magistrate Bill Drury made a presentation at the Kentucky Magistrates and Commissioners Association’s (KMCA) annual spring conference in Louisville early last month.

    During his presentation, Drury detailed information about how to implement a county drug intervention ordinance.

    “Spencer, Anderson and Shelby counties have already established the ordinance and it’s working well,” said Drury.

  • Kentucky Gourd Show this weekend

    Gourdheads unite. The 15th annual Kentucky Gourd Show is on tap for this weekend and it promises three full days of crafty creations  – all concocted from one unassuming fruit.

    Gourds can virtually be made into anything. In past shows, participants have made lamps, purses, hats and the ever-popular Santa gourds. This year, more than 100 humanities students from Nelson County High School made masks as part of their study on African cultures. Their work has been entered in the show along with another 40 art students from the school who made bowls and sculptures.

  • A day of prayer

    Nearly one hundred souls assembled at the courthouse steps Thursday to take an hour out of their busy lives to publically pray together.

    John Rohr, cordinator for Spencer County’s National Day of Prayer Task Force, said that when he first helped organize the event several years ago “there were only six of us.”

    On Thursday, the large congregation of believers drew inquisitive looks from shopkeepers. Motorists slowed along Main Street – trying to make sense of the noon day crowd.

  • EDA provides some answers

    The Taylorsville-Spencer County Economic Development Authority, Inc. (EDA) wants to clear a few things up.

    Since the announcement was made last month that a wet/dry petition would be circulated, EDA has been the center of much attention and questions. At their last regular meeting, more than a dozen citizens on both sides of the issue came out to speak – and many of them had questions that at the time went unanswered.
