  • PHOTOs: Carnival for a Cure

    Hundreds lined Main Street Saturday to watch as the daylong Carnival for a Cure was kicked off with a parade. Many of the parade walkers and floats were decorated with messages about juvenile diabetes awareness. Event organizer Debbie Cannon said the fundraiser collected just shy of $10,000.

    “The people who stepped up for this event were just amazing,” said Cannon, who’s daughter suffers from the disease. “People are already asking if they can help next year.”

  • School board wants roofs fixed

    The need to repair roofs dominated much of the conversation at Monday night’s meeting of the Spencer County School Board.

    The discussion resulted from a request by Superintendent Chuck Adams asking the board to itemize a list of needs in the event that federal stimulus money – also referred to as stabilization funds – were made available to the district. Board members selected roof repairs to the high school and Taylorsville Elementary as being at the top of their list.

  • High school principal resigns post

    After three years serving as principal at Spencer County High School, Tracy Bale said it is time to expand his horizons.

    “Professionally, I have reached a point where I need a different challenge,” said Bale. “When (my family) first came here, we were on the five-year plan. Our five years are up and we’re going to look for a new adventure.”

  • A clash of opinions

    More than two dozen people crammed inside the EDA’s small office Monday night to discuss what will undoubtedly be Spencer County’s biggest issue this year – legalizing the sale of alcohol.

    The temperature inside the cramped space rose uncomfortably, but citizens and EDA board members managed to maintain their  composure, even when put on the spot.

    Attorney General Jack Conway and Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Janie Miller are warning consumers who receive Social Security and other disability payments against possible scams as the federal government prepares to distribute a one-time economic stimulus payment.

  • Two SCHS teens arrested for marijuana possession

    Two 15-year-old boys were arrested for possession of marijuana at Spencer County High School last Tuesday, said Lt. Rick Jewell, of the Taylorsville Police Department.

    Police responded to a complaint of a marijuana smell coming from the boys restroom. When authorities arrived, they discovered a trace amount of the substance in the bathroom and some rolling paper that is often used to smoke the illegal drug.

  • Revard pleads not guilty

    Raymond Revard, Jr. pled not guilty to charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence during an arraignment Thursday in Spencer County Circuit Court.

    He stood quietly as Judge Charles Hickman formally read the charges related to the death of his wife, Lea Revard. Twice Revard glanced past the small barricade of police officers toward spectators in the courtroom. Among those watching the proceedings last week were Lea Revard’s mother, Marie McCoy, along with several other family members.

  • Animal removal service revived

    The question of who will be responsible for the disposal of dead livestock in the county has finally come to a close – at least for the next 14 months.

    Spencer County Fiscal Court approved last Monday to enter into a contract with Dars, Inc. to provide the county’s removal services. The Clark County company, who began providing service locally last Wednesday, will be paid just under $24,000 annually to transport deceased livestock for rendering.
