  • Farmer welcomes return of National FFA Convention

    Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer welcomed news that the National FFA Convention is returning to the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville for a three-year run starting in 2013.

    “We are thrilled to have the National FFA Convention back in Kentucky,” Commissioner Farmer said. “The decision to bring it back is a tribute to the Expo Center, greater Louisville, and Kentucky’s dynamic FFA organization. This convention will give a tremendous economic boost to Louisville and all of Kentucky.”

  • Pattern found in break-ins

    Neighbors along Elk Creek Road, who organized a watch program in response to a string of sudden burglaries there, are again anxious after the Saturday break-in of an unoccupied house at 85 Green Acres Rd.

    It mimics those of at least five other forced entries in the county since November, according to reports from the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department.

  • Slip sliding in a winter wetland

    Slippery roads cancelled district schools Tuesday morning, but caused few problems for motorists. No wrecks or injuries were reported by noon, according to reports from state and local law enforcement agencies.

    Collis Rogers, foreman for the Spencer County Road Department, said Tuesday a fleet of six vehicles began spreading cinder treatments on roads as early as 5 a.m.

    While Wilsonville reportedly saw worse conditions than other parts in the county, Rogers reported most roads remained passable throughout the day.

  • Judge to hear Charter case tomorrow

    Lawyers are set to appear in Spencer County Circuit Court tomorrow afternoon to lay out their latest arguments in the charter government case. At the center of this most recent legal dispute between the City of Taylorsville and Spencer County Fiscal Court is a request for a judge to reconvene the charter commission.

    “This is somewhat unconventional to be asking a court to do this,” said Attorney Sam Carl, who represents the City of Taylorsville. “It’s not exactly democratic either.”

  • Shop with a Cop

    A fresh towel was all one kid wanted. Another asked for pillows.

    When the shopping extravaganza ended one kid came back screaming: “I got everything I wanted.”

    “He was so excited,” said David Young, a chaperone for this season’s Shop-With-a-Cop program –– a holiday shopping spree for needy children sponsored each year by the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department.

    “You take a lot of it for granted when you have it,” said Young.
