Last week they supplied turkeys to fill 16 Thanksgiving baskets for families in need through the Family Resource Center. They recently gave $200 to the Wild Life Management office at Taylorsville Lake and $300 to the archery group at Spencer County Middle School.

Who are they?

The Salt River Strutters, the Spencer County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Each March the group holds a banquet to collect money to go towards many different programs in the area.

Saturday’s forecast promises a wintry mix and some down-right chilly temperatures. Some might say that is perfect weather for a car ride together visiting the warm hospitality of the Christmas Home Tour.

Beginning at 3 p.m., four homeowners will open their doors and welcome in folks seeking a little comfort from the cold and some down-home holiday cheer. Along the way, visitors might just pick up a decorating idea or two.

For Elk Creek resident Kim Davis, she hopes that some of those touring her home will leave tidbits of their own behind.

The community of Mt. Eden has a long-standing tradition of coming together to celebrate Christmas in Mt. Eden.

“It has been going on as long as I can remember,” said Shana Milburn. “And I am 26 years old.”

For decades, these folks have gathered to share food, music from local churches, and crafts while then visiting with Santa.

This is the first time for mother/daughter team Angela and Shana Milburn to organize the event. Although both said they were amazed at the amount of support coming from their neighbors.

As Spencer County’s two elementary schools prepare to exceed their enrollment capacity, the district’s facilities planning committee was reconvened last Thursday to discuss the options.

Committee members were told that any newly-built elementary school in Kentucky is required to not exceed a capacity of 600 students.

But that causes a problem for school officials who said that the county would be better served with a new school that could handle as many as 800 students.
