  • Meth lab found in trunk

    A random traffic checkpoint set up in Southville in Shelby County on Wednesday night led to an unexpected arrest when state police discovered a meth lab in the trunk of a car.
    Troopers arrested Joshua Sherrard, 33, of Spencer County and Stephanie Hamilton, 38, of Nelson County and charged them with manufacturing methamphetamines, first-degree.
    Sherrard was also charged with theft of identity for giving officers a false name, Trooper Hunter Martin said.

  • No tax hike from city, county

    Property tax bills in Taylorsville and Spencer County aren’t going up this tax year – in fact, some will even go down.
    If the city and county each approve their current proposals, citizens won’t see any change, with the exception of the personal property tax rate in the city, which will be lowered.

    At a special meeting Wednesday, the Taylorsville City Commission voted 4-1 to leave its real property rate the same as last year and lower the personal property tax rate.

  • School day extended

    When Spencer County schools resume session next Wednesday, students might notice the school day is 10 minutes longer than last year.
    The Spencer County Board of Education moved at its July 28 meeting to extend the school day in order to create “bank time,” which allows the district to store up days that can be applied when it cancels class for inclement weather or other emergencies.

    In the years since Spencer County Middle School Principal Ed Downs graduated high school in 1979, he has seen the number of computers in schools increase from zero to too many to count.

  • Coulter to be arraigned Thursday

    Former sheriff Steve Coulter is scheduled to be arraigned in Spencer County Circuit Court on Thursday at 9 a.m.
    Coulter was indicted on charges of tampering with public records and second-degree official misconduct by a Spencer County grand jury at the end of June.
    The indictment followed a six-month investigation into criminal activity by Coulter, according to a news release from the Kentucky State Police Drug Enforcement Special Investigations West Branch.

  • Boat donated to sheriff’s department

    The Spencer County Sheriff’s Department now has the ability to increase its presence on local waterways since the department acquired a free boat courtesy of Bullitt County Sheriff Dave Greenwell.
