  • Spanish honor society at SCHS

    Spencer County High School’s first Spanish National Honor Society, known as Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, was inducted Jan. 25. Members of the Rigoberta Menchu chapter are students Ryan Conard, Harley Sweet, Jessica Haun, Sophie Schultz and Hanna Clayton. The advisor is faculty member Vicki Bell.

  • BCTC Dean's List

    Bluegrass Community & Technical College is proud to recognize Spencer County resident Brittany Ford, who achieved dean’s list honors for the 2010 Fall Semester.  The college recognizes academic excellence by naming to the dean’s list full-time students who have earned an overall semester grade point average of 3.5 or better in courses numbered 100 or above.

  • Rice casserole a family favorite

    Judy Evans got her recipe for her rice casserole from her mother. The recipe has been in the family for about six years, and has several variations.

    “My mother was the best cook ever. She was always fixing different things,” said Evans. “Cooking is one of the biggest parts of our lives.”
    Evans does not always use celery, cream of celery soup or bean sprouts. She also suggested substituting cream of chicken soup for one of the other cream soups, if desired.

  • Maple goodness right here in Spencer County

    Maple syrup productions is not just something that happens farther north, in places like Vermont. Tom Scanlan and Sarah Fauber of Riversong Farm discovered that maple syrup can be made right here in Kentucky. They started tapping the silver maple trees on their farm in early February and are making maple syrup a few feet away.

  • McCall to celebrate 90 years Feb. 26

    Jessie McCall is celebrating her 90th birthday at Elk Creek Baptist church Saturday, Feb. 26 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. All family and friends are invited to the celebration. The gift of your presence is the only gift requested. No gifts, please.

  • A grand birthday surprise

    Pictured is Susan McGowan, second from left, with her granddaughter, Morgan,  and daughter-in-law Cara McGowan.  Cara and Morgan surprised Susan with a birthday party at CupCake Corner at The Red Scooter Feb. 12. Susan was greeted by several long-time friends at the party.  Susan teaches at Spencer County High School.  Susan is a Spencer County resident. Cara and Morgan live in Indiana.

  • McAllister graduates from University of Tennessee

    Sarah Elizabeth McAllister recently received a bachelor’s degree in communications and advertising with a minor in business administration Dec. 11, 2010, from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

    McAllister has located to Orlinda, Tenn. and has started a job with an advertising firm on Music Square in Nashville.

    Sarah is the daughter of Tony and Carol McAllister of Orlinda; the granddaughter of the late Leonard and Margaret McAllister of Taylorsville and the late Russell and Lois Griffith of Parkersburg, West Virginia.

  • Let's all do a little fancy dancin'

     The Spencer County High School Dance Team had a successful “Taylor Swift” dance clinic.  The clinic had 94 student participants in this exciting event.  Each child received a t-shirt and cowboy hat.  Students performed their dance routine at the SCHS boys basketball game on Feb. 8.
