  • Welcome to the Calipari, UK honeymoon

The Coming of Calipari to University of Kentucky-at-Euclid fanaticals has been pretty as dogwood and sweet as honeysuckle. All good stuff, right?

The honeymoon so far, is all aces.

This week is still basketball season, isn’t it? So, Wildcat fans, pull on your swoon CalipariNation tee-shirts and revel on ...

Spencer County’s grand jury has indicted Ronald Inghram on two counts of wanton endangerment following an incident in February when he allegedly pointed a deer rifle at police.

  • Alcohol petition draws concerns

Battle lines are just beginning to form as supporters and opponents claim their side in the verbal grabble over legalizing alcohol sales in Spencer County.

At Monday morning’s fiscal court meeting, several preachers stepped down from their pulpits and petitioned magistrates in person to see their side of the issue.

“Since some magistrates have put their name on the list of supporters, I think it is appropriate that we address the court,” said Jeff McCarty, Spencer County resident and pastor of Fisherville Baptist.

  • LETTER: 10-year-old says “beer is bad”

I have been looking on the road. Have you? There are beer cans.

I am 10 years old and I don’t like seeing beer cans everywhere. It doesn’t look good at all. Do know when I get older the earth is going to be a bad place.

Also, people that drink have bad wrecks. You can die and have bad diseases.

I know it is hard for some people to stop, but buy something other than beer.

  • Bears beat Anderson 3-1

Good pitching, clutch hitting and solid defense combined to give the Spencer County Bears an impressive 3-1 victory over visiting Anderson County last Thursday night.

The Bearcats dented the plate in the first inning for a lone run but it could have been worse if not for a diving snag of a line drive in left field by Spencer County’s Cameron Smith that ended the inning with an Anderson runner stranded on third.

In the third inning an unassisted double play by Bear 2nd baseman Timmy Riley ended another scoring threat by the Bearcats.

  • A MATTER OF OPINION: I’m no Grace Hanadarko

“Attention all units, you are reporting to the scene of an active school shooting.”

With those words, I could feel my pulse begin to race. I watched silently as a parent’s worst nightmare began to unfold. Two teenage students barely looked my way as they ran past. Their faces pale. Their eyes wide with fear.

“They shot my friend,” cried one student as she craddled another laying in a dark pool of liquid. In the distance, shots rang out – and for a second, I think my heart actually stopped.

  • Fire destroys Mt. Eden home

Mt. Eden Fire Department responded to a house fire at 14286 Mt. Eden Road around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning and discovered the second story fully involved. Mt. Eden Fire Chief Doug Herndon said that because a cause could not be determined, the incident has been turned over to ATF and Kentucky’s fire marshal office. The apparent vacant home was a total loss. One firefighter was taken to Jewish Shelbyville for evaluation. Herndon said he was treated and released. Assisting Mt. Eden were Waddy, Shelby County and Anderson County fire departments.

  • LETTER: People will always find a way to get alcohol

I have a problem with people who drink and think it is okay to get behind the wheel and take everyone’s life into their own hands.   I also have a problem with those who consume alcohol and then get violent with their family and friends.  These actions are not okay with me.
