  • LETTER: School buses are under-appreciated

    To my surprise on Thursday August 28, I found out that another stop was being added to my children’s bus route. Frustrated, I contacted the transportation department to find out what was going on, since my children were already on the bus after school for an hour.

    As I talked with Jack Senior, I began to realize that it wasn’t only frustrating for me as a parent, but also for Jack and his staff as well.

  • Policy for submitting letters to the editor

    The Spencer Magnet welcomes letters to the editor and asks that readers adhere to the following guidelines when submitting letters:

    • No form letters or photocopies.

    • Letters must include signature, address and phone number of writer. No unsigned letters will be published.

    • The Spencer Magnet reserves the right to reject or edit any letter submitted.

    • Readers are limited to one letter every 30 days.

  • Cross country places second at Shelby Invitational

    Spencer County Cross Country attended the Shelby County Invitational last Saturday and had an outstanding day at the races. 

    The girls came away with two individual wins and earned second place team honors, while four boys placed in the top 25 during various races.

    Christina Shawver won the girls JV 5K by nearly one minute, with a time of 22:13, leading SCHS to a second place team finish.  Laura Klotz finished 5th, Adrian Gregory 11th, Whitney O’Dell 25th, and Bethany Crews placed 64th for a combined team score of 79.

  • LETTER: Thanks for supporting JDRF

    I would like to thank everyone who came out to support the JDRF at our Bowling for a Cure Fundraiser. We had a great turnout and everyone had lots of fun. I would like to personally thank everyone who donated their time to help me with this fundraiser. Additionally, I would like to thank the following businesses for their support in the form of donations: The Spencer Magnet, Wal-Mart Shelbyville, DQ Taylorsville, DQ Shelbyville, Graeter’s Ice Cream, Bluegrass Bowling Center and The Sentinel News.

  • Register tapes traded for educational aids

    Spencer County Middle School is proud to announce they are saving register tapes for educational equipment. Register tapes can be collected from Country Mart and redeemed for valuable educational equipment such as computers, science, band or sports equipment and more. The program kicked off on September 1, and register tapes can be collected until March 31, 2009. The students and faculty of Spencer County Middle School would appreciate your support by saving your register tapes from Country Mart in order to help them receive their needed equipment.

  • Student Excels

    Corey Thomas, a freshman at Spencer County High School, attended the 2008/2009 National Young Leaders State Conference held in Nashville last week.

    Corey’s recent accomplishments have included: Placing third in the district competition in 2008 Governor’s Cup in Science, placing fourth in district competition in 2008 Governor’s Cup in Social Studies, placing fourth in regional competition in 2008 Governor’s Cup in Social Studies, and finishing in a tie for 21st out of 100 in the state competition in 2008 State Geography Bee.
