  • LETTER: Reader says don't sign wet petition

    The petition for the wet or dry vote that is portrayed by its founders to be so good for everyone is already proving to be costly. It is dividing the county, and if they get enough signatures, it’s going to cost us, the taxpayers, at least $20,000.

    The best way to stop this and save the county money we don’t have is don’t sign this petition to begin with.

    Scooter Fairy Gourd Princess Laurie Woodward poses for a picture with customer Sherry Spader, of Louisville, during the recent Kentucky Gourd Show. Woodward’s crown, basket and wand were all made from gourds by some local crafters. Her fairy gown was a re-fashioned wedding dress embellished with ribbon and tulle. Woodward gave visitors of the gourd show free seeds to plant their own gourds.

    Free sports physicals

    Free sports physicals will be held at Spencer County Physical Therapy on Sat. June 13 from 9 a.m. - noon.  Also,during the physicals, Dr. James Ransdell and Elk Creek Dental Care (located in the Physical Therapy Building) will be offering free custom sports mouthguards to the first 50 Spencer Co. athletes. Parents must be present to receive the free mouthguard. If anyone has any questions, please call Spencer County Physical Therapy at 477-0300 or Elk Creek Dental Care at 477-5800.

  • RIGHT PATH: Helping loved ones

    “I have not seen or heard from my son in four weeks. I know he was alive a month ago because he stopped by his grandparent’s house asking for food and money. You see, my son is running from multiple warrants for drug possession. I know that he has guns, and I’m afraid he’ll kill himself or someone else–including me. I’m actually praying he will get arrested and go to prison so that he can at least realize that he has a problem.

  • Historian Tom Watson revisits Jeptha Knob

    After the article on Jeptha Knob, this scribe just had to go up there and take a look. I took several photos of the magnificent view and what must be meteorite debris. There were some huge boulders and many colorful small pieces. I may as well make it clear immediately that I was there by invitation. The property on the knob is all private. You can’t just drive up there because locked gates won’t allow it.

  • Ash borer found in nearby Shelby County

    The emerald ash borer, a foreign-born insect that is decimating ash trees in the Midwest, was found near Cedarmore in Shelby County last week. That is the first confirmed sighting of the pest in Kentucky. A few days later, the borer was also found in Jessamine County, according to a press release from University of Kentucky entomologists.

    UK Senior Nursery Inspector Joe Collins said entomologists are trying to determine the extent of the infestation in Shelby County, and he predicted “it will spread.”

  • State looks for local suggestions on bridge, KY 44 projects

    With two major road projects on tap for Spencer County in 2011, engineers from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet held a public meeting last Tuesday to give residents not only the first glimpse of the plans, but also the chance to voice suggestions for improvements.

    “We are trying to build projects that fit the community’s structure,” said state highway engineer Mike Hancock. “We will take all public comments because good ideas can come from anywhere.”
