  • Become the newest member of Pack 177

     Cub Scout Pack #177 is a new pack in Spencer County. They are very excited about getting started and have been meeting weekly since June. Meetings are held at Taylorsville Assembly of God. They will be having a Meet & Greet Family Night on July 24 at 7 p.m. at the church. This is an opportunity to meet all of the members of the pack and join. They will also be having a yard sale July 25. If anyone is interested in donating items, please contact Larry Fields at 477-5622.   • Eaton to run for state senate

    After 34 years serving  Shelby County, David Eaton said he is hoping for a new position to serve from: State Senator.

    Simpsonville's City Administrator is throwing his name into consideration for a 20th district state Senate seat that Sen. Gary Tapp is vacating in 2010.

    "After careful thought and prayer, and with the urging of many citizens, I am excited about the opportunity to run for this seat to serve all the citizens of the 20th District," he said in a press release.

  • $11,700 missing from high school activity funds

    An independent auditing firm has been called in by the district to find $11,700 missing from the SCHS activities fund.

    Superintendent Chuck Adams said that Brown and Company, a certified public accounting firm located in Bardstown, was scheduled to perform a required yearly audit throughout the district this summer, but was called in early to look into the high school’s financial records.

    Adams said that the unaccounted funds could be the result of missing cash, concession inventory or both.

  • Rash of vehicle break-ins

    As many as 10 cars were burglarized Wednesday night in the neighboring Taylorsville subdivisions of EarlyWyne and Highview Estates. The trend continued over the weekend in other parts of town with an additional break-in and a stolen vehicle.

    Officer Thomas “Sparky” Schultz, Jr. was working early Thursday morning when the police department received regarding car break-ins the two subdivisions.

    Schultz said that most of the cars entered were left unlocked by the owners and that no windows were broken in an attempt to enter the vehicles.

  • Gehrig,Sullenberger, Adam Cox, and the Cal effect

    While a self-centered jug head, anti-hero returned to baseball to wild cheers, a pair of genuine American heroes rose above the madding crowd last weekend.

    Lou Gehrig was honored at ball parks across America July 4, 70th anniversary of the revered Yankee's farewell speech. And, U.S. Airlines pilot Chesley Sullenberger was featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes in a fascinating piece with captain graciously fending off weak journalism from Katy Couric.

    Gehrig and Sullenberger, men of parallel grace, immense dignity and reluctance to embrace hero-worship.

  • County employees to get 2.5 percent raise

    Spencer County Fiscal Court approved 4-1 to increase all 60 county employees pay by 2.5 percent Monday.

    County Treasurer Doug Williams estimated the cost of the raises to be between $30,000 and $35,000. Magistrates will continue to receive $650/month plus $300 for expenses. Members on the board of adjustments, planning and zoning and the ethics board will also maintain their rate at $60/meeting.

    Magistrate John Riley was the only no vote on the pay hike.

  • Newly published author is not new to writing

    Elvis Presley has been known to affect the lives of people all over the world. Even here in Taylorsville, a woman's life was changed by the lyrics of his songs.

    Gena Smith-Gaines was inspired to begin writing songs and poetry when she heard the music of Elvis Presley. 

    “When I heard his records I really enjoyed the music and the words. I decided I would like to write songs,” Gaines said.

  • EDA needs more funds to survive

    City and county leaders were able to quickly agree on most aspects of their new interlocal agreement concerning EDA – even the part about each government contributing their fair share. What leaders hesitated on, however, was how much that contribution should be and where to find it in their budgets.

    The questions arose Monday night while members of Spencer County Fiscal Court and Taylorsville City Commission were reviewing a contract to continue supporting the efforts of Taylorsville-Spencer County Economic Development Authority, Inc.(EDA).
