  • ENGAGEMENT: Nolan, Thomas to wed Sept. 22

    Ashley Nolan and Robert Thomas announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.

    The bride-to-be is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and is employed at YH America in Versailles.
    The groom-to-be is a graduate of the Department of Criminal Justice at Eastern Kentucky University and is employed as a deputy with the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department.
    A wedding is planned for Sept. 22, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Old Union Holiness Church in London.
    All family and friends are invited to attend.

    One of the oldest and best of the truly American dishes enjoyed all across our country is corn pudding — sweet, just-ripe summer corn freshly cut from its cob, delicately seasoned and bound in a rich custard.   • PHOTO: Collins on 8U state championship team

    Hayden Collins was a member of the 2012 Northern Cal Ripken 8U All-Star Team in Lexington. The team played in several tournaments and won the Sandlot Baseball Throwdown Tournament in Athens, Ohio, and the Woodford County Summer Slam. They were also the East Kentucky 8U State Champions and were runner-up in the Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional Tournament in Vincennes, Ind. Hayden is the son of Eric and Lisa Collins of Lexington and the grandson of Susan Collins of Mount Eden.

  • PHOTO: Volleyball team defeats Iroquois 3-0

    Spencer County’s Bethany Martin (8) sets the ball for a teammate during the Lady Bears’ first volleyball game of the season, a 3-0 win over Iroquois last Tuesday night. The Bears handily won their games, 25-8, 25-10 and 25-11. They faced North Bullitt and Nelson County on the road early this week, before a home game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Collins. They will play in a tournament this weekend at OVVC and will host Shelby County next Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.

  • Former Spencer Countian wins gold at Special Olympics

    Jason Swift Jr., 15, formerly of Spencer County, recently competed in the Special Olympics of Maryland, where he took home the gold in the 100-yard dash, mini javelin throw and running long jump.

  • Bears win scrimmage 21-19

    After weeks of hitting each other in hot summer practices, the Spencer County Bears took to the football field against an actual opponent last Friday night in a scrimmage at Nelson County. The hard work of the summer may reap rewards.

    Flag waving time in America.
    With our country’s problems — hateful political discourse, the national debt, racism, on to a national obesity problem (Walmartians) — those who say America is in decline are wishful thinkers (Hugo Chavez), whistling past the graveyard (Iranian imam), or just don’t get it (Cuba’s Castro brothers).
    Nice, 104 medals at the 30th Olympiad — 46 gold, 29 silver, 29 bronze. Well ahead of China, Russia and the rest.
    But there is more than metal here.
