  • Wrestlers finish among top at state

    Pictured are Spencer County Elementary School students Colton Price, left, and Seth Thompson.  Both are on the Fern Creek Youth Wrestling Team and wrestled at the state tournament last weekend at the Frankfort Civic Center. Price won first place in his weight bracket. Thompson finished third place. Fern Creek as a team finished 4th place.

    The Spencer County Middle School cheerleaders had an exciting season that ended Jan. 29.

    The Spencer County Extension Office’s SOS Program for 2011 begins on March 14 this year.

  • Celebrate St. Patty’s with pistachio cake

    I had pistachio cake for the first time on St. Patrick’s Day 13 years ago when a coworker made it for an impromptu celebration. Pistachio has long been my favorite ice cream flavor, but I had never heard of it flavoring a cake. The cake has become one of my favorite things to make for St. Patrick’s Day even though the only relationship is that it is green.
    My coworker was hesitant to give me the recipe, so I spent some time playing with the recipe until I had one I liked.

  • Shannon Brock joins Spencer Magnet as editor

    Shannon Brock was recently hired as the editor of The Spencer Magnet. Brock joined the staff last week.
    Brock comes to the Magnet after spending three years as a staff writer and news editor at The Anderson News in Lawrenceburg.

  • Cleanup week starts March 20

    Commonwealth Cleanup Week, an annual weeklong event implemented by the Energy and Environment Cabinet, runs from March 20-26, and also kicks off the Great American Cleanup, which runs March through May, Solid Waste Coordinator Curtis Ochs announced in a news release.
    “Its purpose is to provide Kentucky communities an opportunity to ‘spring clean,’ recycle and help promote personal responsibility across the commonwealth,” Ochs said.

  • Read Across America week

    Each year the Spencer County Education Association sponsors Read Across America week. The week- long events center around Dr. Seuss’s birthday which is March 2nd. To celebrate, the Cat in the Hat made an appearance on the Bearly News at SCES. Each student in the district receives a Cat in the Hat sticker and is invited to participate in the daily events.  Pictured is The Bearly News crew with the Cat in the Hat and the WCUB logo.

     

  • Taylorsville woman killed in Oldham County crash

    A Taylorsville woman died Wednesday in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 42 in Oldham County.
    Lois M. Bailey, 68, died after police believe she lost control of her vehicle, spun into the opposite lane of traffic and was struck on the driver's side by a van.
    The crash occurred in the 13100 block of West U.S. 42.
    According to police, Bailey had been traveling eastbound on U.S. 42 in a 1999 Ford Contour. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
    The driver of the van, 43-year-old Robert Ochsner of Louisville, was not injured.

    Spencer County High School recently announced the names of six students who have been selected as candidates to participate in Governor’s Scholars Program this summer.
