  • Vacation Bible School schedule

     

    July 11-15

    Little Mount Baptist Church will be holding VBS July 11-15 from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. for children ages 3 through sixth grade. This year’s theme is Saddle Ridge Ranch. For van pick up, call 477-8774 or 477-8432.

    First Assembly of God, located at 402 Garrard St. in Taylorsville, will be holding VBS July 11-15 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Call 477-2985 for more information.

  • Women outdoors program

    Registration is now underway for the annual Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) weekend workshop sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

    The BOW workshop gives women the opportunity to learn a host of skills that will improve their knowledge and enjoyment of nature.

  • Home cooking: Broyles’ Caramel Icing

    Judy Broyles got her recipe for caramel icing from a friend many years ago. She has seen variations of it in cookbooks. Either dark or light brown sugar can be used to get slightly different flavors.

    Broyles has been making this icing since her children were young. Caramel and chocolate is her favorite combination. She also uses the icing on yellow cake, spice cake, and white cake. It can be used on nearly any cake mix or scratch cake recipe.

  • Strikers first in state

     The Strikers, a U12 team with the Spencer County Soccer Association, proved they were the best in the state by winning the US Youth Soccer sponsored event, the Kohl’s American Cup on June 13th.  

    The tournament took two weekends to complete and the boys had to win four games in the extreme heat to take home the championship.  The Strikers had to win games against Shelbyville, Meade County, and Rineyville to advance to the finals game against South Nelson beating the team 6-1 to win the finals.

  • God is in control

    I read with amazement the editorial cartoon in the Magnet which showed our forefathers at a conference table. They were discussing to take out a line in the Constitution that said the government should be in charge of health care, home loans, student loans, banks, insurance companies, auto makers, etc.

  • LETTER: In response to pool company complaint

    I am writing in response to a letter I read in last week’s paper concerning the owner of Taylorsville Pools.

    We have done a lot of business with Jim Kannapel since the opening of his store and we find him to be a very nice man.

    We bought a pump for our pool back in May and had some trouble installing it. We called Jim and he immediately came to Wakefield to help.

    New hours at

    Circuit Clerk’s office

    Due to continued state budget cuts, the Spencer County Circuit Clerk’s office business hours will be changing effective July 12.  New office hours will be as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thursday, 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. (4 p.m. to 6 p.m. driver’s license issuance only). The office will be closed each day from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. for lunch.

    Spencer Co. Circuit Clerk Becky M. Robinson apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

  • 'Tenth Inning' coming in September, sequel to 'Baseball'

    “Tenth Inning” – Ken Burns’ sequel to the monumentally successful “Baseball” – comes to us via PBS Television in September.

    “Tenth Inning” will chronicle “Baseball” 1993 to 2008, beginning where the original series left off. And yes, influence of performance-enhancing drugs will be addressed.

    The Muckdogs finished a great season June 19 with all team members receiving a trophy. The coach-pitch team includes: Tyler Lester, Bralen Spencer, Wade Hutt, Heavenly Redmon, Gracie Sandusky, Jacob Sandusky, and Jaiden Harris. Not Pictured are: Dalton Harrison, Michael Keown, Jackson Scott, and Kolton Scott. Coaches were: Jenny Banta, Kelly Hutt and Donna Lester.
