  • SCMS student dies in wreck

    Thirteen-year-old James Douglas Mitchell, of Waterford, died Saturday afternoon in Nelson County after being ejected from a vehicle in which he was a passenger.

    Mitchell would have been an eighth grader at Spencer County Middle School this fall. Principal Ed Downs described Mitchell as a happy-go-lucky child that was well liked by his classmates.

    “You couldn’t help but like him,” said Downs.

  • Honor Flight: Spencer County veteran saluted for WWII service

    In the basement of Vincent Heuser’s home in western Spencer County are scrapbooks, files, photos and other records that detail his three plus years of service in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

    But the thing a visitor’s eyes turn to first is a large painting of a sea battle that shows ships ablaze, Japanese planes diving toward U.S. vessels and serves as a vivid reminder of the sacrifices made over 60 years ago in a war that defined an entire generation.

  • New SCHS principal named

    Jocelyn Lyons, a former Spencer County Middle School administrator, has been selected as the new high school principal.

    “We are so pleased to welcome her back to the community,” said Assistant Superintendent Norma Thurman. “I think she’s a very good choice.”

  • Crash kills two on US 31

    Two people died Thursday morning as a result of a head-on collision on US 31-E in the southwestern portion of Spencer County.

    Phyllis M. Cook, 56, of Lebanon was driving northbound when she apparently lost control of her vehicle in a curve, said Trooper Ron Turley, Kentucky State Police public information officer. Her 2007 Chevrolet crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by John V. Maradits, 43, of Louisville. Neither vehicle had passengers.

    Maradits was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bullitt County Coroner’s office.

  • Hell is real and can be avoided

    Did you know that more people believe in heaven than hell? Even if they do not believe in the actual existence of the place, almost everyone has their own concept. Some people believe it’s where all the “cool people” go, and that only fuddy-duddies go to heaven. They laugh and joke about the wild parties that take place, and that the “real” party won’t start until once they arrive. Others believe we are living in hell now and that our only escape is by death into heaven.

  • Free sports physicals

    Free sports physicals will be held at Spencer County Physical Therapy on Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon.  Also,during the physicals, Dr. James Ransdell and Elk Creek Dental Care( located in the Physical Therapy Building) will be offering free custom sports mouthguards to the first 50 Spencer Co. athletes.   • Crossroads: Farm-City Funfest

    On Monday evening, June 15, the Spencer County Extension Service, along with the Spencer and Jefferson County Farm Bureaus and the Jefferson County Extension Service, is sponsoring the Crossroads:  Farm-City Funfest on the farm of Tommee Clark in Jeffersontown.  Sunny Acres Farm is located at 6516 Echo Trail in Jeffersontown.

        This year’s event will be focusing on buying locally produced goods and items.  There will be Farmers Market vendors set up along with many other displays relating to buying local.

  • Napper named head coach

    A week after Matt Powenski resigned as head football coach at Spencer County High School, his chief assistant was named to replace him at the helm of the Bears’ program.

    Wes Napper was named last week officially as the new head football coach and inherits a program that Powenski helped guide to three straight playoff appearances.

    SCHS Athletic Director Brian Higdon made the announcement this week, calling Napper the “obvious choice.”
