  • Elk hunt deadline April 30

    Hunters who dream of harvesting an elk in Kentucky have just a few short weeks left to buy a chance at that opportunity.

    Kentucky’s elk quota hunt application deadline is midnight, April 30. One thousand lucky applicants will be drawn to hunt elk this year.

    Elk lottery applications are available for $10 online at fw.ky.gov, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources’ website. Applications are not sold in stores or through the department’s phone license sales vendor.

  • LETTER: Alcohol is “devil’s tool”

    The headline in the Magnet brought back memories of when I was sheriff 34 years ago. I was not for alcohol then and in the 34 years since, I have not changed by mind!

    If anyone would admit the truth, they would have to say alcohol is one of the greatest tools the devil has because it kills innocent people on the highways, in the home, and not only that, it causes innocent children to go hungry, be abused, and suffer from all kinds of other disastrous treatment.

  • Audit of Sheriff’s office

    A state audit revealed the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office fairly represented the county’s tax system, although some internal-control issues exist within the agency.

    The latest financial audit –– which covered a period from May 2007 to May 2008 –– found the office lacks “adequate segregation of duties,” according to a report from State Auditor Crit Luallen.

  • BELIEVE IN HIM: Jesus, the suffering servant

    Sometimes we can get pretty comfortable in our Christian lives.  So much so that we often forget what Christ underwent when He gave his life on the cross.  Recently, I had the privilege of sitting in with the youth at my church during their Wednesday night Bible study.  The youth pastor was teaching from the last two chapters of Matthew, Jesus’ death and resurrection.  Listening in on these two events reminded me once again how much Christ suffered when he gave his life so I could be saved.

  • LETTER: Thank you Cindy Nall

    I am writing to pay a huge compliment to one of the nicest people I have ever met.  Her name is Cynthia Nall and she manages the cafeteria at Spencer County Elementary School. 

    I am a volunteer and sometimes a substitute for the cafeteria and have seen first hand what this lovely lady does for our children and school staff.  There are many mornings that she is at the school hours before anyone else and there are countless times that she comes in at night or weekends to make sure special programs or activities are taken care of.

    I’ve come to the realization that polls are just a means for one group to impose their political persuasion on the rest of us.

    Why else would a new Gallup poll state that 71 percent of those interviewed place “a great deal or a fair amount” of confidence in the president to bring about an economic recovery?

  • Shaving heads, saving lives

    At least 11 people will shave their heads here Saturday to raise money for childhood cancer.  It’s part of a national effort, known as St. Baldrick’s Day, to bring awareness to the cause.  

    “This is something that really hits close to home for me,” said Aimee Barr, event organizer for the Spencer County project.
