  • COLUMN: Recap: 2013 session ends

    The final two days of the 2013 session of the Kentucky General Assembly were filled with a mix of emotions ranging from frustration to exhilaration. The Republican Caucus began at 10 a.m. with a meeting to discuss the proposed changes to the Kentucky public employee pension systems; we moved quickly to the floor of the House at noon and found ourselves in recess shortly before 2 p.m. The recess would last late into the evening, little action was taken and day one ended in deep frustration the issue that had overshadowed the session would remain unresolved.

  • PHOTO: National champs!

    The Spencer County Middle School Dance Team competed at Jamfest Nationals on March 23-24. The team took first place in their division and are now national champions. The team members, in no particular order, are Ilona Kovacs, Meredith Barnett, Allie Thomas, Hallie Helton, Beth Hill, Kaylee Smith, Mckenzie Potts, Lily Mitchell, Ali Henderson, Allison Dunbar, Lindsey Miller, Lindsey Bush, Molly Marlow, Jena Ellis, Kassidy Pulliam, Rikki Urquhart, Peyton Forberger, Morgan Forkey, Cayla Perkins, Cate Jarboe and Lydia Rowe.

  • Camp Invention is coming to Spencer County this summer

    Just because school is out during the summer doesn’t mean the fun of learning has to end.  Children entering grades one through six are invited to attend this year’s summer camp from Camp Invention titled Geo-Quest. The camp is June 10 through June 14 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Taylorsville Elementary School.
    The Geo-Quest program will feature the following:
    Cache Dash — An international expedition where you can navigate your way to treasure-filled caches containing global challenges from youth around the world.

  • April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

    April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Kentucky leads the way in blanketing our Commonwealth in blue and silver pinwheels. The blue and silver pinwheel is a symbol of childhood and forms the cornerstone of the national Pinwheels for Prevention child abuse awareness campaign being conducted throughout the nation.  Kentucky’s campaign hopes to be the largest in the nation. The campaign, which last year was the second largest in the nation, is being coordinated through Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky.

  • Simpsonville fire claims 30 goats and barn

    Still-smoking, charred remnants of a barn are the horrible aftermath of a blaze in which dozens of prize dairy goats died Wednesday morning, their terrified bleating echoing through the darkness when the structure went up in flames.
    “It was so pitiful. You should have seen them. It was a nightmare, just a nightmare,” said Joann Shelburne in a trembling voice as she looked out at the ruins where half of her prize-winning Alpine dairy goats perished in the predawn hours.
    She said 25 goats died, and five more had to be put down.

    As the words, “The town is now open,” are belted out, roughly 60 students hustle back and forth across the makeshift town square focusing on their jobs assigned for the day. This is called Junior Achievement BizTown.

  • Election for flood control commissioners, secretary is Monday

    Votes in the election of flood control commissioners and secretary can be cast Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the office of the Spencer County judge-executive on Main Street.
    A commissioner from each of the three precincts will be elected, along with a secretary from the district at large.
    The one-year term begins May 1.
    Votes are limited to property holders within the levee district.
