  • Tinsley graduates from lineman program

    Andrew Tinsley graduated July 28 from the lineman training program at Somerset Community College as a Class C lineman.

    He completed an additional program in smart grid hardware training for digital metering. Tinsley is now certified CDL Class A, pole climbing, flagging, bucket rescue, pole top rescue, first aid and CPR. He is a son of Jeff and Beth Tinsley and a grandson of Bill and Shelia Tinsley, Jean Walker and the late Tom King. He was recently hired by Elliot Electric in Lexington, and planned to start working for the company on Monday.

    Many of Spencer County’s newer residents may not be fully aware of the county’s rich and interesting history. Here’s a review of some of the county’s highlight events of the past and people who made those events memorable.

  • Raised beds provide local chef flowers, fresh produce

    Sara Gibbs of Elk Creek has had raised beds for her garden for at least 10 years. She moved to her farm in 1995.
    “I’ve always gardened,” said Gibbs.

    The following property transfers were recorded in February and March 2011 at the Spencer County Clerk’s Office:

    Richard H. Jewell and Patricia Jewell, Taylorsville, to David H. Houghlin and Donna B. Houghlin, Taylorsville, and Brian Houghlin, Louisville, a tract of land near Houghlin and Point Streets, as described in deed book 238 page 758, $33,000 cash in hand.

    Patricia Hart and Melvin R. Hart, Waddy, to Roy Keith Cornett, Taylorsville, 3.025 acres at 2603 Goose Creek Road, as described in deed book 238 page 796, $15,000.

  • Cornerstone Christian to host basketball league

    Cornerstone Christian Academy will host a four-week instructional basketball league beginning Sept. 10.
    The league will be three hours each Saturday. The first two hours of the league will be for offensive and defensive instruction. The last hour, games will be played.
    The league will be led by former and current basketball coaches. The camp will teach individual offensive moves, how to use screens, moving without the ball, low post moves, proper shooting form and proper defensive positions.

    Coming off a stellar 2010 season, the Spencer County Lady Bears soccer team has high expectations, but their opening game served as a reality check and coach Charlie Traughber says that’s just fine.

  • Bears impress in scrimmage

    The Spencer County Bears will open the 2011 football season on the road at Bardstown on Friday night trying to erase the memory of last year’s winless season from their minds.
