Boys high school basketball in Kentucky is winding down with the Sweet Sixteen slated for next week at Rupp Arena. Those who watched the Spencer County Bears suffer through a dismal 6-22 record this year might not give much thought to titles and trophies, but while the young squad has plenty of room for improvement, they’ve got plenty of time to reach it.

“I definitely knew that this would be a tough year for us coming in with such a young team,” said head coach Jacob Barmore.

So, here we are, in a recession, maybe a depression. The government is printing money which is not backed by gold or silver and the Chinese refuse to buy our bonds.

The Chinese have 40 percent of their factories closed and their economy is falling hard. The rest of the world economies are crumbling. We sent much of our manufacturing industry to other countries causing our government to lose a big tax base and the government allows them to still have large tax breaks.

The month of March has meant little to Spencer County Lady Bears basketball in years past, mostly because it was usually just a time to look back on disappointing seasons capped by disappointing finishes.

But this March is different. This March the Lady Bears are playing and winning and advancing farther in the postseason than they ever have.  With last Wednesday’s thrilling 42-38 win over 30th District dynasty Shelby County, the Lady Bears not only advanced to the championship game, but also qualified for the 8th Region Tournament.

The Spencer County High School Weight Team recorded its highest finish to date with a 3rd place finish at the Fern Creek High School “Rumble in the Jungle”. Fern Creek’s weight meet had a total of 14 teams competing in the bench press, power clean, and squat. Spencer County was in position to win the weight meet outright, but some late scratches on the squat cost them some valuable team points and individual finishes.
