  • Faith for Today: Learning to forgive

    Mary Karr’s uncle had endured long enough!  The tall Texan grabbed his chain saw and began to separate his own house into two halves.  He was sick and tired of living with such an unforgiving woman to whom he had not spoken in months.  He had enough.  He divided his house and moved her portion a few hundred feet away.  The two of them finished their years on earth living on the same farm, in the same house… living two very separate lives.

    Kindergarten

    registration

    Spencer County Elementary kindergarten registration will be held through March 6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Children who will be five years old by October 1, 2009 and are not currently enrolled in Spencer County Preschool should register.

    To be fully enrolled the following must be on file:

    • Proof of residency

    • A copy of the original birth certificate (not a hospital certificate)

    • A copy of the student’s Social Security card

    • Current immunization certificate

  • SCHS boys fall in district play to Shelby

    Having watched the Lady Bears make history minutes before, the Spencer County Bears took the floor with little to lose in the opening round of the 30th District Tournament as they squared off against an older, bigger Shelby County squad.

    While the young Bears made a game of it early, the magic surrounding the girls’ first ever district tournament win couldn’t work any wonders for the boys, as their long season came to close with a 69-41 defeat.

    Lenten Friday night fish fry will be held every Friday through Lent from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church. Menu items available will be fish, shrimp, frog legs, onion rings, macaroni & cheese, coleslaw, baked beans, home-made desserts and assorted beverages. Carry out will be available. All proceeds will go to charitable works in our community by the Knights of Columbus. All Saints Catholic Church is located at 410 Main Cross St.

  • Cycling event racing this way

    Taylorsville and Spencer County have been asked to play host to hundreds of cycling enthusiasts this summer during the USA Cycling 2009 Masters Road National Championship.

    Local leaders – who are eager to promote tourism in the area – see this event not only as a chance to showcase what the county has to offer, but their willingness to work with athletic event organizers.

    “We need to get more involved in sports tourism,” said City Manager Steve Biven. “We need to let people know we are capable of handling (events).”

  • Meth lab bust in Mt. Eden

    Two Mt. Eden men and a woman from Bloomfield are facing felony drug charges following a meth lab bust Sunday night.

    Spencer County Sheriff’s Deputy Gordon Miles said he was acting on a tip when he and fellow officers converged on a home at 5616 Mill Road in Mt. Eden.

    “I have been watching this house for several weeks,” said Miles.

  • Kentucky completes Vols sweep UofL’s Pitino keeps eye on prize

    Kentucky’s win against Tennessee was a notch down from gorgeous, but was pretty enough to earn the delight of Big Blue Nation. A 13-0 run from the get-go and an exclamation mark at the end.

    A Vols Sweep is UK’s season highlight so far.

    The Wildcats’ play was poised, patient and selfless (23 assists) and postgame buzz “... if only UK had a third scorer,” was made redundant (again) when the Committee had 20 points, 10 rebounds and and seven assists.

  • Marshall: An all-around performer

    Kenisha Marshall has been a target all season as opponents have tried just about every strategy to shut her down. Getting noticed by opposing coaches has resulted in double-teams and tight defenses, but it’s also resulted in Marshall being selected as an All 8th Region performer.

    Lady Bears Coach Daniel Cox announced Marshall’s honor this week as his squad is hoping to erase a less-than-stellar end to the season as they gear up to enter tournament play.
