It’s a new season for the Spencer County Bears tonight as they open up the 30th District tournament with a rematch with Shelby County in Lawrenceburg. But the Bears are reeling from a 6-21 regular season record and they enter postseason a little bruised and battered.

Area roads are down for the count after being served a one-two punch from motorists and harsh winter conditions – and like black eyes, potholes are popping up along many rural roads.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced Monday at fiscal court that $430,000 will be spent toward repaving rural secondary roads in Spencer County. Another $200,000 will go toward regular maintenance and pothole repairs.

As we weathered the recent snow and ice, it was easy to take note of the damage it brought. There were trees down, cars off to the sides of the roads, and the unsettling darkness in our homes when the lights should have been on. Mother Nature then changed course by following her winter display and frigid temperatures, with a couple of unseasonably warm days, allowing us the opportunity to clean up most of the leftover debris while the neighborhood kids rode their bikes. Not wanting to spoil us, she then treated us to a day of high brisk winds followed by a rainbow over Elk Creek.

The women of Little Union Baptist Church in Spencer County honored their widows at the Annual Valentine Breakfast recently at Ryans in Louisville. There were 32  in attendance.
