  • LETTER: “Popping the top” on the real alcohol issues

    Organizers of the move to bring alcohol sales into Spencer County have attempted to frame this debate by ignoring the real issue.

    B.J. Smith says this isn’t a moral issue, but rather an economic one. Others have said it’s not about alcohol, but about choice.

    That’s a familiar tactic that’s been used often to mask a controversial topic. Proponents simply disguise it as something more defensible.

  • Help support Project Graduation

    The Spencer County High School Class of 2009 will be graduating next month and in what has become an annual tradition, the class will gather back at the high school one last time following their commencement ceremonies for Project Graduation.

    The event is designed to give the seniors a safe and fun alternative to post-graduation parties and will be highlighted by free food, entertainment, games and prizes. The event takes months of planning and the community has long been wonderful about donating prizes, money and food for the event.

  • Entering the “Hall” and checking out pictures

    Induction into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame was a humbling experience and so satisfying to know the honor came from my peers.

    As far as I know, I’m the only Spencer Countian to make it. Jim Russell wasn’t a native of Spencer County, but the Courier-Journal writer resided here and died at Little Mount.

    He was one of the finest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. I predict he will be voted into the Hall of Fame soon.

  • Revard indicted for murder

    A Spencer County Grand Jury has decided that there is enough evidence to place Raymond Revard. Jr. on trial for the murder of his wife.

    Revard, 41, was charged in January for the alleged shooting death of his wife,  Lea Revard. When police arrived at the couple’s Normandy Station Road home, they found the 39-year-old woman laying on the kitchen floor with a gun shot wound at the back of her head. In his call to 9-1-1, Revard reportedly told dispatchers that his wife had shot herself.

    For some gardeners, the tactile experience of maintaining the garden is not really what they’re after.  I love the whole process but I realize that most people just want things to look good without too much fuss.  There in lies the mission of the Perennial Plant Association’s “Plant of the Year” program.  Each year, industry professionals vote for what they think is an outstanding perennial, this year the votes have been cast for Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’.

  • LETTER: Lincoln Logs closes

    It is with sadness and a sense of great loss we will lock the doors to Lincoln Logs Child Care this Friday for the last time. Due to the declining enrollment/economy we are forced to close our doors.

    I could not walk away without publicly commending the staff for their loyalty and service. We had a great team. A well trained staff that was dedicated to providing the best of care and the best of themselves to our children and their families.

    I will miss seeing you all everyday, but the friendships will go on.
