  • FSA ice storm damage program

    Agricultural producers who suffered damage as a result of the January 2009 ice storm may request cost-share assistance from USDA to rehabilitate damaged farmlands. The Emergency Conservation Program (ECP), administered by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency FSA), provides cost-share assistance when disaster damage is so severe that recovery without federal assistance is unlikely. Requests for assistance will be accepted at the local FSA Service Center from February 10 until April 13, 2009.

  • In the garden: Tree assessment and risk management

    Two weeks ago I asked “what more Mother Nature?”  Well, another gusty wind storm was served up adding to the collection of debris left by the ice storm.  Some serious questions are coming in about what to take out and what to try and save.  I am not a certified arborist but I can pass on the guidelines that certified arborists are taught when it comes to tree assessment and risk management.  These criteria may help you decide what to do now and in the future.

  • LETTER: Response to youth basketball letter

    I am writing in response to the letter last week regarding Spencer County Youth Basketball.

    The coaches are volunteer parents who are giving their time to teach the game of basketball and provide a good experience for our children. Good sportsmanship is important and I believe that it has been emphasized.

    Anytime you have 10 children on the court playing enthusiastically there will be some “rough play”, but from what I have seen it is not intentional and the kids are out there having fun.

  • Two-hour stand off, two arrests

    A New Haven man and a Taylorsville woman have been charged with possession of meth after keeping deputies at bay for two hours last Tuesday night – barricaded inside a mobile home near Waterford.

    Deputy Russell Cranmer, acting on the tip of an informant, spotted Alan F Metcalfe entering the home of Andrea G. Carlson located at 130 Stumps Lane. Cranmer had received reports that Metcalfe, 46, was trafficking the illegal drug and could have a mobile lab in his vehicle.

  • LETTER: Grower disagrees with Farmers Market rule

    During the recent ice storm, I passed some time looking at my seed catalogs by the light of a coal-oil lamp and wishing for spring. For the past five years, I’ve prepared a huge seed order in preparation for planting my gardens and growing produce and flowers to sell at our local farmers market. I had planned to participate in the market again this year, but sadly I am unable to do so because of a rule change.

  • Lady Bears working to get out of slump

    The Spencer County Lady Bears have picked a bad time to suffer through a slump, but after losing three straight, and six of their last ten, it’s hard to label this latest stretch anything but.

    The skid started last Friday night on an evening set aside to honor the team’s three seniors – Kenisha Marshall, Shelby Pfeiffer and Lindsey Kempf. All three girls have helped turn the tide of Lady Bears’ basketball around over the past few seasons, but the past week is not how they had hoped to finish up their final campaign.

    Every year, many good bills fail simply because there isn’t enough time for both chambers to fully consider them. That’s especially true in a 30-day “short session” like this year’s. In the last two weeks, however, the Senate has taken early action on major legislation, giving the House more time to study those bills.
