    Since some of us had to cut back on what we spend at local businesses (producing local jobs)because of the new tax on our homeowners insurance, what does the county government plan for an encore?  A tax on taxes?

     Why are high schools changing their school colors to black?  Are black uniforms cheaper than blue ones?  Are they just copying off UofL?  If UofL people jump off the bridge, will high school people jump too?

  • Two churches now offer Dare To Care

    The recent ice storm was a good indication that the harsh months of winter have undoubtedly arrived, but the freezing temperatures and loss of electricity is not all that is to blame for a difficult start to the New Year. The tight economy has put a lot of people struggling just to keep food on the table.

    This problem is one of many that have encouraged members of the community to find a solution that can help meet some of the most basic needs in Spencer County with the help of Dare To Care.

  • Lady Bears take down Henry County, 48-34

    It took a little while for the Spencer County Lady Bears to shake off the cobwebs from being off an extended period of time, but they overcame a one-point deficit at the end of one quarter on their way to a 48-34 win at Henry County Friday night.

    Senior Shelby Pfeiffer scored all seven of her points in the opening quarter to keep the early deficit from being greater, and Spencer County’s defense came out and clamped down the Lady Wildcats in the second quarter, holding them to only four points.

    The Shelby County Area Technology Center and Jefferson Community and Technical College – Shelby Campus are offering an informational meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. to find out how many free college credit hours your son or daughter has already earned in high school for college.

  • LETTER: Something needs to be done

    Over the past several weeks I have watched our kids play basketball in the parks and recreations league. Unfortunately there has been some rough play by several teams in the second and third grade age group league. The coaches have not tried in the least to take their teams aside to tell them that this is not acceptable.  All they care about is wins for their team.

    A fish-out-of-water romantic comedy, “New In Town” stars Renee Zellwegger as Lucy Hill, a Miami businesswoman sent to the upper Midwest to overhaul and slash the work force at an underperforming junk-food factory.

    Career-minded Lucy isn’t prepared for the biting cold, the quaint small-town customs or the colorful characters she encounters—especially fireman Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick Jr.), who also happens to be the factory’s labor-union rep.

  • Finding power to stay warm

    The numbers of Spencer Countians without electricity has dropped from thousands to hundreds since last Tuesday night’s winter ice storm. Good news for most, but for the 400 families still with out power – each day can be a struggle just to stay warm.

    For some residents, seeking shelter in the high school’s cafeteria was a much better alternative than huddled together under layers of blankets.
