Both programs recognize students for their outstanding commitment to community service and present awards based on the student’s academic performance and the overall impact of the student’s contribution(s) in the area of community service.

  • Programs to help with winter energy needs

    Because of the colder weather which translates into greater energy usage, E.ON U.S./KU will make additional funds available to customers in need who struggle to pay their winter heating bills.

    Specifically, E.ON U.S. is increasing its customer match for the heating assistance program WinterCare and Winterhelp, from 25-cents to $1 -- four times the traditional match. The increased match will be retroactive, beginning November 1 and continuing through April 30, 2009.

    Chase Thomas, son of Kevin and Diana Thomas, has been selected the SCHS Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar participant. Danielle Curtsinger, daughter of Karen Curtsinger, has been selected as the alternate participant. These students were nominated as HOBY candidates by SCHS.

    Three-month-old Lauren Stowe, daughter of Mark and Jill Stowe, was the youngest visitor to sit on Santa’s lap during his annual visit to the Red Scooter. Patrons were also treated to Secret Scooter Christmas tea and cookies during the December open house event. Scooter gal Jo Woodward said, “It was a fun day having the children in the store for the first part of the day and visiting with new and old friends as they met to start their home tour.” The business served as the first stop for the annual Christmas Home Tour sponsored by the Main Street Committee.

  • Farmer welcomes return of National FFA Convention

    Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer welcomed news that the National FFA Convention is returning to the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville for a three-year run starting in 2013.

    “We are thrilled to have the National FFA Convention back in Kentucky,” Commissioner Farmer said. “The decision to bring it back is a tribute to the Expo Center, greater Louisville, and Kentucky’s dynamic FFA organization. This convention will give a tremendous economic boost to Louisville and all of Kentucky.”

  • Pattern found in break-ins

    Neighbors along Elk Creek Road, who organized a watch program in response to a string of sudden burglaries there, are again anxious after the Saturday break-in of an unoccupied house at 85 Green Acres Rd.

    It mimics those of at least five other forced entries in the county since November, according to reports from the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department.
