    As ugly, but important as Kentucky wins over Kansas State and West Virginia were, Western Kentucky’s stunner against No. 3 Louisville was handsome in patience, smarts, efficiency and toughness. Signature win for coach Ken McDonald and brag-rights feather-in-the-cap for the Hilltoppers.

    More, WKU’s win is a reminder for those struck with fat-head disease, and reduces the perceived distance between No. 3s and 2s in America and the ‘beam-us-up-Scotty,’ types in Sagarin ‘others’ compilations.

  • FROM THE CAPITOL: Time to begin working across party lines

    To many people, it must have been a remarkable picture.

    After months of bitter campaigning, President-elect Barack Obama sat next to Sen. John McCain for a meeting a few days ago. They talked at length about how they could reach across party lines to discuss – and move forward on – some of the nation’s most challenging issues.

    If they can do this on a national level, why can’t we do it in Kentucky?

  • Spencer County gets help from NWTF

    Last week they supplied turkeys to fill 16 Thanksgiving baskets for families in need through the Family Resource Center. They recently gave $200 to the Wild Life Management office at Taylorsville Lake and $300 to the archery group at Spencer County Middle School.

    Who are they?

    The Salt River Strutters, the Spencer County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

    Each March the group holds a banquet to collect money to go towards many different programs in the area.

  • A MATTER OF OPINION: It’s a family tradition

    Isn’t this the most wonderful time of the year?

    I simply love the Christmas season. The lights. The music. The smell of Chex Mix baking in the oven.

    Yes, you read that right. Not gingerbread or sugar cookies, but Chex Mix. It’s a tradition in my family that at the first hint of a wintry breeze, someone’s making a trip to the store for couple of cereal boxes and some Worcestershire sauce.

    Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #210 will be having an all-you-can-eat country ham breakfast from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday. The breakfast is $6 per person. Carry-out is available. Everyone is welcome.

  • Christmas Home Tour this Saturday

    Saturday’s forecast promises a wintry mix and some down-right chilly temperatures. Some might say that is perfect weather for a car ride together visiting the warm hospitality of the Christmas Home Tour.

    Beginning at 3 p.m., four homeowners will open their doors and welcome in folks seeking a little comfort from the cold and some down-home holiday cheer. Along the way, visitors might just pick up a decorating idea or two.

    For Elk Creek resident Kim Davis, she hopes that some of those touring her home will leave tidbits of their own behind.
