  • KARRER TAKES RACE

    The fact has long been established among politicians that the majority of Spencer County votes for Democrats. Not any more – at least, not for judge executive or sheriff.

    Republican challenger Bill Karrer soundly defeated Democrat incumbent David Jenkins, 4,480 to 2,451 in the 2010 general election Tuesday.

    Donald “Buddy” Stump, Jr., also a Republican challenger, narrowly defeated long-serving Democrat Sheriff Steve Coulter, 3,643 to 3,365.

    Photographs taken by the Spencer Magnet during Trick-or-Treat on Main will be available for pick up Monday, Nov. 8. The Spencer Magnet is located at 100 West Main St. in Taylorsville. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. weekdays.

  • GERI TRAVIS: October's Healthy Hero

    Geri has spent her life contributing to the health of those around her.  She obtained an education in health management and put that knowledge to work at the YMCA.  She worked to bring youth sports programs to Spencer County when few were available.  Geri also assisted in the development of workout stations at Spencer County’s Ray Jewell Park and helps coordinate health fairs.  For many years now, Geri has taught aerobics, boot camps, and walking classes that bond Spencer Countians in good health and good friendship.  She leads by example as well.

  • Lady Bears net individual awards

    Success on the field for the Lady Bears soccer team this season has netted several postseason awards for a number of players.

    Named to the first team all 8th Region team is Hannah Jaggers who scored 25 goals and 10 assists during the season. Named to the second team all 8th Region team was Madison Ratchford who scored 24 goals on the season and had nine assists.

    Receiving honorable mention All-Region honors were Tori Palmer (30 goals and six assists) and Shelby Lurie (11 goals and 11 assists)

  • A tropical treat: Pineapple salad

    Rachel Price received her recipe for pineapple salad many years ago from the late Gail Hahn who was a beautician in Taylorsville. It’s become a favorite dish among her friends and family, and is a special request at the Bluegrass Basket Guild potluck supper meetings.

    “When I first took it, everyone went on and on about it,” said Price, who brings the dish to every basket guild meeting she attends. “When I missed a few meetings, they said ‘we missed you, but we missed your salad too!’”

  • LETTER: Light-weight jackets only

    I attended the special- called meeting at the high school last Thursday regarding the issue of “outerwear” being worn in the classrooms. At the time that I attended this meeting, I would like to note that my son has not even worn a heavy jacket to school yet, so I was there to try and learn the facts and advocate for all student’s rights if I felt like they were being violated.

  • Goodlett wins national FFA award

    Justin Goodlett of the Spencer County FFA chapter was named national winner of the Equine Science Entrepreneur Proficiency Award Program. Four finalists competed to be named the national winner during the annual national FFA convention in October in Indiana.

    Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excelled as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while they gained hands-on career experience.

    Goodlett was awarded $1,000 during a special ceremony at the national convention.

    For Goodlett, raising and showing horses is a way of life.
