  • Did somone say cookies?

Margaret Glasford hosted her 15th annual Christmas party just prior to the holiday season.
“It’s a fun family tradition,” Glasford said. “Everyone either bakes their cookies at home and brings them to share, or they bake cookies at the party.”
Sugar cookies are the favorite, so the group baked and decorated over 200 of them. This year, many of the sugar cookies were baked ahead of time, she said, “so the little ones could start decorating as soon as they arrived at the party.”

  • A neighboring hero named ‘Bland’

This article is courtesy of the History of Kentucky by Lewis Collins and J.A. and U.P. James, published in 1847. It was reprinted by the Henry Clay Press, Lexington, Ky., in 1968.
Because so many Spencer Countians were once Shelby Countians before the division of Shelby in 1824, it seems quite appropriate to offer this biography. Remember, this was published in 1847. Because of its length, The Spencer Magnet is presenting the article in two parts. Make sure to check out next week’s edition for the second half of the story.

  • COLUMN: A prescription for marriage in 2012

How does it feel to see the old year out, and the beginning of a new year? Maybe this year, the promises made to change yourself will be a true resolve, with no procrastinating. Why not start by memorizing this very short, simple little poem:
    Procrastination is my sin…
    It causes me endless sorrow…
But, I’ve made up my mind to quit…
And I will begin … tomorrow.
Well, as silly as that little poem seems, maybe it is more true than it should be. Especially, for most of you, as it relates to marriage.

  • COLUMN: Ooey gooey goodness

Before our daughter was born, we had a tradition to spend New Year’s Eve with some of our friends. We always went out to dinner, usually at a nice Chinese restaurant, and then went back to someone’s house to play karaoke or Rock Band and watch the ball drop on television.
