  • What's Happening: Spencer County's community calendar

    Country Ham Breakfast

    Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #210 will be having an all-you-can-eat country ham breakfast from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.  Saturday. The breakfast is $6 per person. Carry-out is available. Everyone is welcome.

    Lions Club meeting

    The Spencer County Lions Club  will be meeting Monday at Elk Creek Restaurant and Grocery at 7 p.m.

  • Spencer FFA competes at National Convention

    Spencer County FFA members represented the Kentucky FFA Association in a number of activities at the National FFA Convention was held October 20-24th in Indianapolis, Indiana.  

    Highlights of the convention were when Stephanie Mitchell was named one of the four national Star Finalists in Agriscience and Andrew Baird was selected as one of the four Star Finalists for Star Farmer. This was a first for the Spencer Chapter and for Kentucky. Mitchell and Baird were among finalist selected from over 1,200 members who received the American degree.

  • Fairness and charter governments

    Exactly what were lawmakers thinking when they created Kentucky’s statute on charter governments?

    Circuit Judge Charles Hickman hopes to discover what transpired during that process as the case of City of Taylorsville v. Spencer County Fiscal Court continues into its second year.

    “I think it is important that we look into the legislative history,” said Hickman Friday. “What was the need for enacting the statute?”

  • Free smoke detectors

    Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Department plans to start going door to door installing 100 donated smoke detectors, thanks to the generosity of Wal-Mart, said TSCFD Chief Nathan Nation.

    “The goal of the program is to install smoke detectors in homes of the elderly, families of small children, lower income families and those who live in manufactured or mobile homes,” said Nation.

  • LETTER: Voters deserve their questions answered

    As citizens, we all have the right to ask questions of our elected officials.  We also have the right to the expectations of being given an honest reply.

    It is of my opinion those that are not willing to give an honest answer have no right to run for office.

    I have a question that we should all think about: what does the federal government, the state government and our own Spencer County government all have in common? Could it be that they are all financially broke?

    Spencer County High School would sincerely like to thank the Taylorsville Hometown Pizza and manager for supplying pizza coupons for our 1st nine weeks perfect attendance awards.  Please see the 10-28 issue of The Spencer Magnet for the list of these 139 students.

    We would also like to thank the Taylorsville Dairy Queen and manager Bob Gill for donation of blizzard coupons for students on the A honor roll.

  • LETTER: Oversupply, corruption biggest problems for dairy industry

    I would like to commend freelance writer Laura Clark for her article on dairy farming. When Ms. Clark asked what I thought the biggest, single problem was facing the dairy industry it was very difficult to answer because truthfully, nobody knows. The two most common schools of thought are oversupply and corruption.
